Leica lens - now I understand....

Just received a Leica 35mm Summicron ASPH lens today. I’ve had a M8 and now a M9, but had only used Voightlander lenses. I am stunned by the smoothness of the focus and the build quality of the lens. I took a few quick snaps in the office and they looked great.

Weather or not the 35mm suits me - that is yet to be determined (My Voight is a 40mm)

Rather than sometimes more nervous bokeh with some non Leica lenses, I'm struggling to find really big difference among modern RF lenses on M-E.
Have you tried Nokton 35 1.4? Nice lens with fine focus, not just a Skopar 🙂.

There are excellent Voigtländer lenses, for sure; I have a few of them.

But nearly any Leica lens for the M is very well made and performs at an extremely high level; the Voigtländer lenses are a bit more variable one to the next as well as unit by unit in the same model.

That consistency of performance and build standard is what you're paying for with the often exorbitant Leica prices... 🙂

Zeiss ZM 35 1.4 is the 35mm lens. Only downside is the size of that lump. I much prefer it to my Asph Summicron 35. Apart from the size. Leica got that right.

Personally, I don't like to see down there. One of the downsides of being enormously endowed is having things protrude into shot. 😀

The 35/1.4 Zeiss is soooo special. Great lens for half price of the Leica and every bit as good.

Cosina builds some great stuff, many of it in the same league of build quality as Leica, yet not at the same atmospheric price levels.

There is no "h" in Voigtländer.

Voigtländer or
other makers can be a good buy

while waiting for Leica (dream of) lens(es).


Better having a "compatible lens" than no lens at all.


I've used lenses from Voigtländer, Zeiss, Canon, Olympus, Ricoh, and more
and when possible "replaced" by the Leitz/Leica lenses, and I do understand
that for uniformity of images that my choices based on.
