Leica M-D: Pure for the sake of . . . purity?

Some lovely photos, Vince!

I have some recent work with the M-D to process yet, it's been overshadowed in resent weeks by the CL since I wanted to concentrate on that in order to learn it. It could go either way at this point... I'm leaving on a six week trip next Wednesday and I'll either take the M-D with 35 and 75 lenses or the CL with 28 and 50 lenses.

Or I might do something else entirely. One shouldn't be so predictable, eh? :D

Many thank yous! I finally managed to get out and do some shots (going away for 10 days seemed to help that), and I've been using that 65mm setup as well as the goggled 35/2 Summicron. I'm still on the fence as to whether I'm going to keep the Summicron or not. It has a little bit of haze in it, and I'm not sure that's it's really offering much of an advantage over my 35/3.5 Summaron. Maybe the closer-focusing ability and the additional 1.5 stops, but not sure if that warrants purchasing it.

Somehow my M-D developed a scratch on its sensor, and Leica NJ had to send it to Germany to be looked at. So it looks like I'll be without my M-D for a while :(

That's a bummer, hopefully you'll have a quick enough turn around. Nice images above here and very nice tonality in the B&W Jones Falls and Rain shot.

Many thanks -- I think the quality of B&W I can get from this camera is almost on par with what I get from the Monochrom 246.

I have no clue how the scratch got on the sensor -- I've never come close to ever touching it, and any 'sensor cleaning' I've done has been limited to a bulb blower and nothing more. Hopefully they're not going to come back to me with a 4-figure estimate for repair!

Yes, as a MM I user, I'd be hard pressed at times (many times :) to tell whether an image came from a Monochrom whether 1 or 246 or another camera. And the color images (love the plums) are nice too. Dual Range is a favorite lens; would love to see a DR version of that plate if you haven't already imbibed of them!

Ah unfortunately that DR has been sold on -- it was only with me for a short time. I was selling it for a cousin of mine and only was able to try it out for a couple of weeks. It was very tempting to buy that lens from him, but I didn't see the point of buying a lens that I could only use (on the bodies I have anyways) up to 3ft. But, I am likely to buy that 35/2 goggled Summicron from him, which is a peach of a lens. It's currently being looked at by the Camera Wiz himself to see if the haze can be eliminated. Combine those goggles with the 1.25 magnifier and it's a super view through the viewfinder (and I wear eyeglasses).

And we have no shortage of figs around here -- looks like I'll have to do a Monochrom version for the time being :)

Agh! Of course they're figs :) I've been eating those little Italian Plums around here and looking at your plate of figs somehow "plum" came out as I typed. I used to have an eight -element 35 'cron myself. Its value, along with my curiosity to try an early Summilux, and I let it go. Good luck with that one you are looking at.

Recently returned from NYC, where I packed the ZM 35/2 and ZM 50/2. Here's a sampling from the Met and the Village/Washington Square.

Just got my M-D back from Leica. It took a little over 6 weeks for it to go to Germany, get its sensor cleaned (they managed to clean it fine and I guess the scratch wasn't what they thought it was), and send it back. No charge.

So just an FYI -- if you need ANY service to your M-D, be prepared to have it sent to Germany. New Jersey does not service the M-D, so even something as seemingly routine as a sensor cleaning will require that the body be sent to Germany.
