Leica M-P : The preview lever returns to the M.240

I don't think the question is "What's it for?" but rather "Why's it so big?" because I know that it's not so big on the M3/2/4.

Because the a small hole was all that was needed to access a simple almost jewelers screw.

I have seen the hole behind the big red dot and I submit it is large to accommodate the special big oversize tool now required to make the adjustment. To plug a big hole, one needs a big screw.

If Leica wanted to sell these cameras they would lower the standard M240 price and price the M-P version at the price of the original.
It seems with their trade in incentive spoken of in another thread they are not selling up to expectation.
Why now will an uglier upgrade improve that?
That's a big ol effin zit right on the forehead of that camera (the RF cover screw).
Is this someones PS mock up or an official image of the new body offered?

In seriousness though. 2gigs of Ram should actually be a real improvement. COnsidering how little that actually costs it should be in the camera already.
Wonder if they will upgrade the original M240's for a fee?

Leica sells every camera and lens they make. I think they know something about marketing their products. ;-)

They are usually for assessing missed potential water conservation methods and soil deficiencies but hey! ... dirt is dirt right? 😉

To my eyes, the size and position of the M240 red dot looked wrong too. It's a design problem created by the removal of the frameline illumination window - one of the main distinctive visual elements of the camera's front projection. Leaving that area blank would make if look so...X-Pro1.

This screw is unusual, in that most M design elements are either something that has been seen in the film bodies, or something that has to be there for digital-specifc functional reasons. Leica doesn't usually do superfluous.

You know what they could have put there? Same size/shape as the frameline illumination window? A flash.

The first M240 looks so Cyclopsian, and now with the classic Leica RF adjustment cover screw it looks even more so. If not a flash I would have had a faux illumination window there from the start. Looks like Leela from Futurama. "Good news everyone....."

I can get used to the screw. But in all honesty, a decent glass screen protector is ~25$, and you can always tape over the red dot. The 2G RAM addition is welcomed, but for how much RAM is worth these days, Leica should upgrade the current M240 with as much, if not RAM.

I think Leica should have kept the size of both the red roundel and the new screw the same size as the M6-M9.
That said the new size does not look as big in real life as it does in pictures. I think the same will be true for the new screw.

If I had $$$, I'd be silly enough to throw it away on cult-ish & fashion items as the seasons change.

Considering the street price of 2G's of RAM at less than $15 (and presumably much less for bulk purchases), this should absolutely be a free upgrade.

Actually, considering how inexpensive RAM is and how expensive cameras are in general, I'm surprised why modern cameras don't have similar amounts of RAM, or image buffer space as laptops.

Edit: I wasn't suggesting that the RAM could be replaced, but that Leica might discount the current M240...maybe wishing for too much?

You know, stranger things have happened. I think Leica may have some other M related Photokina announcements (M-E2....) is it a good strategy to have so many M models in the current line up? And what does it do for pricing?
I think at the very least we will see downward pressure on M240 prices.
