Leica M4

UPDATE, after shooting a couple of rolls off I've worked out that the 1000th speed is unusable( underexposes badly) and that to my mind all the other speeds are under exposing apart from the now working slow speeds! I've decided to treat it to a full CLA which is probably a bit overdue anyway!!! untouched in 40 years!!!
 
nobbylon- who will you use for the CLA? My wife's uncle is looking for someone skilled to work on his M4, preferably near Den Haag.

He bought his camera new...and it will probably get passed on to his grandchildren...
 
don't fear to use it without reserve, it's a camera not a museum paperweight! I bought a close to mint M4 too, and every ding I made I remember every situation. Kind of sentimental you know!

Will van Manen does an excellent job and he's a very nice guy to communicate with. Zoetermeer is close to Den Haag. Your uncle could bring the camera himself.

Did you use the MR meter to measure light with? It could be that it's off and that actually causes the underexposure.

I checked the mc4 against 2 om1's, my D70 and a bessa R2 so I know it's accurate. The negs say it all to be honest on the 1000th speed, very obvious and the rest just appear slightly out. It does need a service and as i'm going to keep this one I think it would be nice to get it sorted out properly anyway.
 
OMG! Went out to Fujiya at lunch time and saw a chrome M4 for less than 100k yen. I can see that there is some sort of shallow scratch on the top plate. But other than that, the rating is AB.

So tempted to buy the bloody thing as M4's are not normally priced this low.

... about US$1237 for a M4 (not black right ? ) is not that cheap in Japan, I have seen them for < 8万円 recently in some stores. 😉
 
I like it when old threads get a second life... 😉

(There's a three-year gap in between today's posts and the last one from 2008)
 
I actually ended up selling that M4 after it was serviced at CRR Luton! I never could get along with meterless cameras. No regrets even though it was a nice one. I've ended up with 2 M's that get used very rarely. An M2 I painted black, never used now but I made a promise to not split a set with 2 lenses so can't sell and my M6 that I occasionally use.
M6's have always been my favorite after trying them all and I've sold 3 before learning my lesson!
An M4 with a meter might be nice though.
 
It's funny - I love the M4 precisely because it is meterless. I hate fiddling with exposure settings once I've raised the camera to compose. I much prefer to use a separate meter, or sunny-16, and have the exposure set before I raise the camera to my eye.
