Leica M5... good choice?

HI,

I'm using my M5 with the 35mm Ultron and it is so so so special! I love it. I put HP5 Plus. I haven't finished my first roll of it but the experience is being absolutely incredible. It's MY camera. I didn't feel it before with any camera.

Now, I'm thinking on a 21mm lens... which one would you advise me? I will use it on my M5, of course. 🙂

I have read really good things about the Voigtlander 21mm Ultron but it seems big. Have you used it? I used a C Biogon some years ago and it was small and it didn't have any distorsión and was tack sharp. I now it depends on what I prefer...

and which viewfinder do you use on M5 for 21mm?

I have used the 21mm Voigtlander on M5 and I liked it. And yes the meter did work with it. As far as finders go you can't go wrong with the 21mm Leitz but I also really like the 21mm Yashica SLR finder. I bought it from a Leitz guy and they are not easy to find.

I liked CV 21/4 on it. Used with plastic CV VF, but now I got their metal one (21/25mm combo). I had Leitz branded metal 21mm VF and loved the aesthetics, but there was really no space outside of the framelines, looking more like a tunnel-view.

Because I switched to Super-Angulon 21/4, M5 covers other focal length. I've read SA 21/3.4 beyond certain serial number has a cutout in the rear shell of the lens to accommodate M5's metering arm, but I've never tried one myself.

Sug, this cut-out causes the meter cell not to pop up, to protect the little cell from those violent glasses of the Super-Angulon.

Interesting. I didn't know that. So the meter arm could be stowed away during the use, huh (of course you'll get no light metering). I wonder if any other lenses had that trick for M5. Guess that light meter design lasted only for one generation (M5, CL) so no one else did that I assume.

Ohh Erik! If I understand you correctly - I can use my "pre M5" SA on an M5 without damage to lens or camera, just without metering?

I think the cutout is there to fool the camera, making it think no lens is mounted, thus the arm stays retracted. (Funny talking about mechanical camera with "fooling" and "make it think" 😀) Pre-M5 SA will cause the arm to come out so it's a no-go.

Well, at least that's what I thought after reading Erik's comment, but I am no expert.

Yep - thanks Sug. Now I recall that thread. My lens is way too early first year of production. I had moment of "but wait ...what if I could..." excitement there, but it is not to be.

Great choice. Use it well. Pair it with a yellow-green for foliage. The only two filters you need.

I was making up a mockup of how I use the meter in my M5. It can be a little confusing at first when people first see the M5 meter but I believe its one of the best meters out there. But I use this method to judge my exposure using the zone system, or if Im lazy I'll meter off of dry sidewalk.
