No, it has nothing to do with the thickness of the framelines, but with the fact that the framelines in the viewfinder indicate a field that is closer in format to the field that is registered on film.
In other words: the framelines are the same as the framelines on the M2, but the picture that is registered on film is smaller.
(The picture on film that you get with the M2 is larger than the picture you see in the viewfinder indicated by the framelines).
You can see this effect on my pictures. All photos have the same magnification factor, but the white field around the pictures with the M5 is thicker than on the others.
(For clarity I've put a picture with the Leica I under the picture with the M5 above.)

I appreciate the clarification, Erik. It makes me wonder, however, if you've compared the same 50mm lens on the Leica I and M5 at the same focus distance. The examples you've posted appear to have been taken at about 3 and 0.7m, respectively. If so, and they still don't match, then I wonder if there are sample variations in the film gate size, or is the M5 an APS-H(ish) camera? That's nothing to speak of your findings, well worth contemplating compositionally, of course.
