No, it has nothing to do with the thickness of the framelines, but with the fact that the framelines in the viewfinder indicate a field that is closer in format to the field that is registered on film.
In other words: the framelines are the same as the framelines on the M2, but the picture that is registered on film is smaller.
(The picture on film that you get with the M2 is larger than the picture you see in the viewfinder indicated by the framelines).
You can see this effect on my pictures. All photos have the same magnification factor, but the white field around the pictures with the M5 is thicker than on the others.
(For clarity I've put a picture with the Leica I under the picture with the M5 above.)
Erik.
I appreciate the clarification, Erik. It makes me wonder, however, if you've compared the same 50mm lens on the Leica I and M5 at the same focus distance. The examples you've posted appear to have been taken at about 3 and 0.7m, respectively. If so, and they still don't match, then I wonder if there are sample variations in the film gate size, or is the M5 an APS-H(ish) camera? That's nothing to speak of your findings, well worth contemplating compositionally, of course.

No, the M5 is a camera for normal 35mm film, but indeed the film gate is slightly smaller than on the other Leicas. They all vary, but the M5 has the smallest of all that I've tried. That is what I wanted to say. That is why the framelines of the M5 are more precise than the others.
The biggest film gate has the early (double stroke) M3.

My F1.1 is now in the hands of someone else. End of an era. Feels weird not having it.
Though my shoulders are liking the new change with one less lens to carry around.

long fingers = M5?
long fingers = M5?
I have pretty long fingers and find on an M3 I sometimes push the lens release button by accident. Now I'm really conscious of it and it feels a bit cramped. I wonder if an M5 is the answer. I've never handled an M5, but I wonder if anyone else has found this?

Yeah, sometimes it's best not to look back after taking some shots. Luckily Toronto is pretty relaxed.
