Leica Monochrom M246

I think we are going to be out in New Mexico in March next year. That and Phoenix. Got a bud thats renting a house out there from Jan-Apr

I'm looking forward to seeing some of your new work from the new camera...

Right now I'm seeing noisy shadows, but of course this is only my second day with the camera and I haven't had a chance to really test it out yet (that pesky paying work has been getting in the way). Hopefully this weekend I'll delve more deeply into it....

over 30K and 2 1/2 years no problems for me. If you do have a problem Leica will take care of it.

This has been my experience also.

I really love the rendering of my CCD sensor. I can't imagine living without it.

The new M-246 has great improvements as far as ISO, buffer, and larger screen. The added weight and bigger size I don't think I will mind. I hope to add this camera to have both monochromes one day.

Anyways, buying my Monochrom was some of the best money I ever spent, and this is from a film die hard who went to art school in the seventies. BTW I still shoot mucho film.

Thanks Vince,

I was really curious if the CMOSIS had a similar look in the shadows that my Canons have. I know the old MM shadow noise looks a lot different. THough I gotta say some of the really high ISO stuff I have seen from the new MM is really really impressive. Make'n me think, dare I say, of maybe opening the wallet.

It's good top be busy. Pays for all the stuff. I haven't had much time to shoot anything for myself lately either. A couple of big projects with tight deadlines.

Thanks again and I hope that we both can get out a bit this weekend.

Hey Cal,

If I still had a darkroom I would still be shooting film is some capacity. It was in kind of a perfect storm. Forced downsize (divorce) and during the same period I lost a couple of BIG jobs becasue I wasn't digital and the rest is history.

When I was in college I had two semesters of zone system courses . Yes I did ALL the test. I really am glad I bought my MM also. It is the only B&W digital I have been happy with (135 format).

Maybe someday I'll retire in New Mexico and pick up an old 8X10 Deardorff and an 8X10 enlarger and explore the landscape but for now the MM keeps me happy for my personal work and the occasional B&W commission.

A,

I do not have a darkroom either, but for the past 7-8 years I have been shooting mucho film concentrating only on image capture. Boy did this annoy many people. My logic is that I can print later, meanwhile film is still very affordable where I can still shoot a lot.

I downsized too to live in a 1 bedroom Madhattan apartment. Developing film in my quantities is kinda maddening, but in my maddness I see wisdom because one day I will be glad I did. I don't think retiring in Madhattan is sustainable for me, but the consulation is through my negatives that I will be able to vicariously live and take NYC with me to anywhere that I'm displaced to, and at that time I have a lot of printing and editing to perform.

New Mexico really requires LF to capture all the textures and the sense of space. I'm right there with you that 4x5 isn't big enough. I lived in the Santa Fe National Forest for a year and a half when Ronald Ray-Gun was President.

Anyways the film verses digital debate is moot for me. I embrace analog and digital as seperate mediums pursueing large format qualities even though currently I'm only shooting small and medium formats. I will say this: The MM9 has been an inspirational camera for me that likely has been the best money I ever spent to make me into a better photographer. Recently I aquired a Nikon D3X to shoot with my Noct-Nikkor for my gal's fashion blog, but this rig lacks the eligance of my MM9 even though it offers color capabilities.

Yeah I agree about the film VS digital thing. I love them both. I did process B&W film and then scan for a while but I figured if I'm going to digitize it then I just might as well shoot it digital.

I do have one regret. I had 3 500C/Ms. Really wish now that I could have hung on to one and a 50 CM FLE and my 180 CM...

A,

Scanning for me seems like taking the same shot twice at best. Perhaps the only benefit is to be able to import an analog image into the digital side for digital manipulation. For me I maximize the image capture to minimize post processing because I'm a lazy slacker. Realize that even though I only shoot small and medium format that I really do think like a LF shooter who basically wants to contact print.

I annoy my friends who do figital and call my MM9 a "hand scanner." LOL. It really annoys them.

I understand your remorse, and this is why somehow I have retained all my film gear.

I hope this post is helpful to those film die-hards that are considering either a MM9 or M-246. Sometimes it is not either/or and sometimes both.

Yes because there still is nothing quite like a beautiful printed silver gelatin or platinum print. Something about the way the metal reflects light. Plus I just miss the darkroom. And in the gallery world silver gelatin prints fetch more than 3 times the price of inkjet.

But I also love digital. THe control I now have is insane. Not only in post but I can shot one frame at 320 ISO and the very next at 6400 and the 6400 looks a lot like tri-x shot at 400 processed in an acutance developer like Rodinal.

They are just tools. Folks just need to find the ones that work for them.

Anyone dare to guess when the M 246 could be available for someone not preordering?
I know the M 240 was in short supply for a while when it came out but not being in the marked back then i never really paid to much attention.

Not knowing how many M 246 Leica will pump out a month and what the demand is, it will be pure speculation but if you have some experience from past releases throw out a date 😉

Or the model after 😄
No, life's to short to wait for something that may never happen.
I remember waiting to buy my first PC, the next one will be better, faster and all that so it took a long time before i bought one.

The dealer I ordered mine from told me this morning that he cannot predict exactly how many he'll get per week/per month/etc, but that he felt he should be able to fulfill my order sometime this summer.

I put the order in last week, well after the early adopters. I'm in no rush.

This is basically the first release (except for specials and small series) coming from the new expanded factory, so it is hard to make any predictions based on past experience.

Already delivered to my friend here in CZ two weeks ago.

I found the best compromise with fast moving technology is always buy the model down and upgrade one step behind. Saves a fortune
