Hi Guys - THis is my first post. I am contemplating the purchase of a Leica camera, and would like to know if anyone knows of the current MP relaibility out of the box. I am located somewhat far away from a Leica dealer that sells film cameras, so I would prefer to have soemthing that isn't going to have infant mortality problems - anyone with any advice? [I would also consider a used Leica, though I don't want something that it going to be a reliabiliy issue]

Welcome Bromo. As to your question: It will need a cla in about 30 years....

if you are buying new from a good dealer, ask for them to take it out of the box and do a visual inspection for the usual suspects.

i just bought a new black zeiss ikon. the first ikon i got last year had problems out of the box so this time i asked the seller to check it out before shipping to me.
he did and the camera was perfect when it arrived.

Welcome to the forum Bromo! 🙂 Leicas are very well made and carefully inspected so you should not have any problems whatsoever. It pays to buy from someone reliable just in case though. Many people here (myself included) buy from Tony Rose at popflash, one of RFF's sponsors. Prices are excellent and service is fast and efficient. I bought a lens from popflash on Sunday and it was delivered to me on the other side of the country today.

Welcome to the forum. I have a couple of MP's and have only had a small problem with the shutter curtain on the oldest. Every twenty rolls or so it wants to stick when winding advanceing the film. Taking the lens off and playing with the shutter a little (as in moving the curtasin back and forth will free it up). Other then that the only other complaints that I have seen is one shutter curtain that was totally come apart and the dust issue with the viewfinder. Mine has some in there but it is not distracting in the least bit. Other then what I have pointed out above you stand 99.9% chance of everything being good and the camera is built like a tank. Buy from a dealer that has a good rep (Like Tony Rose or any other stockist you trust) and you will have many many years of happy shooting.

Good luck!

OK, so I LOVE my MP, but I disagree that it will be as reliable as any camera could be. If you want ultimate reliability, get a pinhole camera. My MP has had two problems: dust in the viewfinder (I still haven't had this fixed) and a shutter-capping problem when film is partially wound at the end of a roll. You may encounter problems with an MP - the good news is that Leica's warranty is excellent, and their service is too.

The MP is a VERY reliable camera, and it's wonderful in use. I'd happily recommend that anyone who can afford it should buy one. But it's not completely trouble-free.
