Leica Q review from the CameraStore

was talking with Stefan at TCS the other day, he's a film shooter but he was also impressed with the Q when it was there.

we both agreed that a 35mm or 50mm would have been nicer and made more sense but the Q seems to be an excellent combo for M shooters that already have a 35mm or 50mm lens.

happy with the GR but am sure hoping to see a 35mm or 50mm version next.
 
I hope Sony and Ricoh are taking in the reaction and upping their game.

I don't need ff, so the Ricoh apsc will be fine me. I want the next gr to have built in evf and 24mp apsc sensor w/ the neat 35 crop that Leica did on the q where u c outside the frame lines (fake rf optical window).

The issue that bothered me was the Q does not allow the electronic shutter to be disabled, the rest I think I am ok w/ outside of course the price...

It looks like a nice performer overall.
The guys video made it clear to me that 28mm is a non starter for me.
That's fine. I'm happy to be less tempted. 😛

Stefan's best photos were taken when he borrowed my gr1v...😉 28mm forever!
 
yeah sorry should have been more specific, to us for our use a 35mm or 50mm version would have made more sense, the 28mm FL sits someplace a little too wide but at the same time not wide enough for our need.

thinking about it last night though, I wouldn't mind getting one to replace my X100.. 18MP when cropped to 35mm, fast AF with scale focusing, fairly small body although lens is a little big.

Does this mean in auto-exposure mode the camera switches to ES (very short time) as estimated by the meter reading?

If so, a high-quality lens ND filter would eliminate unexpected results from ES artifacts.
 
well i put my name down for a Q at TCS, i wont get it in my hands until end of july which is fine since i only really want to test it in europe in august and possibly sell it afterwards.

q for those that have held it, it takes 49mm filter right? (i wonder if the GW3 adapter will work)
also can you do long exposure with this camera? what remote does it take?

I like your style Earl!
You have a GR so... it will be interesting to read and see your perspective on comparaitive output between the two.
Obviously the Q and GR are completly different species when talking about workflow.
Although at 28mm equiv FOV maybe the GR still is the workflow winner for street shooting.

Exactly. But easiest way around this is to use like the M... manual mode or even shutter priority.

The normal mechanical to Electronic shutter usage is hardwired in the fw to automatically switch over once u get above 1/2000th. Unlike other camera maker implementations
- mechanical only
- electronic only
- auto switch between mechanical and electronic once mechanical shutter speed is exceeded.

Yes ND or shutter priority or full manual would get around this issue.. Thus without ND filter, aperture and program modes could be affected if u can't set ISO low enough and u are after shallow depth of field affect.

thanks Andy, I asked TCS to let me know as soon they have a demo Q so that I can play with it at the store.

it's hard to let go of the GR but to be honest, I'm ending using the Iphone 6+ most of the time as general camera, checking exposure and composition before bring the big camera.
but the GR for now is here to stay as it's my ultra light landscape camera

however I have some concerns from watching the TCS video review and online reviews regarding the Q
1. like the Sony A7, EVF and LCD are on all the time, you can't configure the Q to use the EVF for composing and LCD for reviewing, it has to be either EVF or LCD.
2. the display settings seems to be a little cluttered on the LCD screen and possibly on the EVF? I like a minimalist screen that shows me only the ISO, exposure, frames and battery remaining, hopefully it's customisable.
3. a little unsure regarding Long-exposure photography with this camera, I don't see any cable release thread in the body, also it's looking like 30s is the longest you can take. I've read of T mode somewhere but doesn't say it it can go longer than 30s but I'm guessing press to release and then press again to close the shutter.

very curious to see how it fares against my X100 and X100T in terms of size and AF speed as I will most likely be using this camera like the X100 series, center AF street camera.
depending on the demo, I might cancel my order. at the same time I'm very curious to see Fuji's counter against the Q, hopefully a FF X100
 
I doubt Fujifilm will decide to compete with Leica. The maximum potential increase market share is not worth their investment.

In terms of data stream, signal-to-noise ratio the Q will significantly outperform the X100. Based on Bill Claff's statistical analysis comparisons of the M240 and the XTrans II Fujifilm cameras, the Q should have at least 1/2 higher stop more SNR than the Fujifilm XTRans II cameras (XE-2, X-T1, X100T).

Since the Q might have an improved sensor assembly (lower read noise than the M240 cameras), it might even be a stop or more better than the X100T in raw SNR (as is the Nikon D750 for instance).

My X100 displayed shadow region banding above ISO 800 (3 EV underexposure) and banding can be seen at high ISO (4 EV underexposure) in DPR's Q preview test shots.

So, I too will be curious to see how the Q compares to the X100T when both sensors are underexposed by more than three stops (a.k.a. high ISO).

I am also curious to see if the Q sensor does not display the green color-cast issue present visible in M-240 raw shadow regions. (The color-cast is trivial to remedy with a LR plug in.)
 
Interesting review both about the camera and regards what they think of as a problem. The X Vario is "the worst"? Weird; seems a darn fine camera to me.

The Q adds some nice functionality. That said, I'm happier with 35mm fov and the X with an optical viewfinder is near perfect for this type of camera. Neither X nor Q challenge the M-P for my use, or MM246, so I'll stick with what I have (or will soon... Still waiting for my MM) and enjoy reading the buzz.
