This compact camera/lens rig has quickly become indispensable. Since I have pressed it into everyday service for photo documentaries, I am very happy with it as a complement to the M3. Both are are about the same size, although the lens is a bit fatter! Both weigh about the same, feel about the same and work about the same. I use the M3 with TriX and the R4 with slower BW film and Color film.

Both fit in the Billinham bag and work well hanging over the shoulder and/or around my neck.

The best description is I don't even have to think about them anymore as they are just a natural for me to use:

In fact, this weekend is Oktoberfest. The R4 will go it alone to finish off a roll of Rollei 80 and hopefully, have time to use a roll of color film.

Best $500 I ever spent on any camera/lens rig.🙂

yessir, we will be there with my youngest son and his girlfriend-whom-we-hope-will-be-our-next-daughter-in-law. we are going up early friday, and staying through early sunday morning. i have your cell number stored. bringing linda?

Absolutely! Just trying to plan around wheelchair accessible facilities right now. Give me a call and we can discuss the particulars of the day. 😀

Yeah, the compact travel chair is working fine...thanks!

No pictures of it but if I did, the bokeh would be deliciously creamy!

Sharp as a tack and great with black and white but the color is the best I have seen so far and can't wait to give it another color roll to digest!🙂

Thank you, prices for the R bodies are so surpressed and similar to each other right now, I just decided I wanted a 1/2000 top shutter speed, so I went with the 7. I read through the manual already. I just need to get it and spend some film in it this weekend.

And thank you for the advise and info.

Awesome!!

Yeah, Ralph...

You are gonna love that Cron with the built-in hood. But, then, sometimes I like to shoot into the light for a little different result:🙂

kind of top-topic but, any reason to get an R9 over an R8?

And what are some special features that makes the R8/9 special? I've been looking around just for fun and can't find any special info about it, it sounds like any ol' SLR be it nikon (fm2), canon (F1 or something? Don't know my Canon film SLRs) or old SLR Leicas (like R4 etc)

Not used one yet...but someday! Best looking SLR ever IMO but you will get the usual distribution curve of some like it, some hate it, others in-between and hardly any of those voicing their opinions have ever held one.😉

If it is good enough for the likes of Thorsten Overgaard (google it and you will have a lot of reading ahead with smiles on your face), then it is good enough for me. R8 or R9? I believe the R9 is a tad lighter but both will take the DMR back which is something I would love to have. The R8 has a steel bottom plate and heavier frame.

It is NOT the same as a Nikon/Canon/Etc. SLR. Neither is my lowly R4. It is better IMO.😛 And I still own and use Nikons since 1971!

I have the R7 w/50mm Cron, and like it a lot. However, for one-third the price, a Contax RX with Yashica (yes, Yashica) ML 50mm 1.9 old style will be superb, too. In fact, you may find the ergonomics, the quieter operation, built-in motor and 1/4000 top shutter speed to be overall superior to the R7. The 50mm 1.9 has great IQ, which totally surprised me. While it gives a different look from the Cron, it's on the same quality level.

the same could be true of nearly every Japanese SLR maker.

however, if you find that you do with your best work with Leica then you do it with Leica. Price isn't everything. And yes I'd go for Contax before Leica for SLRs personally, but I can understand fully why someone might go for Leica instead.
