I love the concept of the imminent Leica X1 but can't help thinking I'll postpone my purchase until there's an X2 with a faster lens on it.

One thing the history of the Leica nomenclature has taught us lucky people to be here now is that anything with the starting number of 1 is bound to be improved upon - so, Pana G1, GF1, GX1; Olympus EP-1; etc; don't fool us with a longer term view though we've been somewhat torpedoed by the Nikon F5000 - must be good eh?

Computer technology has taught us that technology doesn't stand still. It continues to evolve faster and faster. That goes just as well for digital cameras. It used to be every year or so that a new model is released, but nowadays it seems even faster. One can in concept never ever have the best and fastest digital camera. It is this dilemma that might prevent some of us from leaping into the digital pool. If you're in this set of people, you'll never be happy of your purchase as in your mind you're afraid a newer and better (faster) model will be released right after you buy it. The old saying that the only thing guaranteed in life were "death and taxes". Now we can add "new model will be released right after you buy your digital camera".

The best thing to do is to buy what is best for your needs now and run it as long as you can before you need (or feel the urge) to upgrade. Or buy a used digital that fill that need now and don't have to worry that you might've paid too much for that muffler.
