Leica X2 Revisited

I think I could be HAPPY with the X1...really
All i would probably use it for is shooting Interiors of My Work for Portfolio
and the occasional Fun Late Night Time Shots

Haha, that's also what I mostly use my X1 for. I really like the looks of the X2, but I'll stick to my X1 after reading this review. It's just not enough of an upgrade to justify the extra money I'd have to throw at it.

It certainly does. I'm very excited to get this camera. Loved the X1 except for AF speed and the steel grey color. The X2 fixes both. 🙂 I could be 1-2 weeks from actually using it. Excited despite having the X100 and X-Pro1.
 
The real question I keep asking myself is "why do I keep going back to look at this camera, over and over again, when I already have the M9 and an excellent 35mm lens that I love to shoot with?"

Don't know, but the X2 is appealing to me. Something about the seeming simplicity and small size, a Barnack come to life in the digital realm. It's an emotional reaction, I know. But what else is new? Are we not all about emotion and passion in the photographic world? ;-)

I understand completely... there's just something about it being close to a digital barnack that a few of us really love.

For me it's the handling. Those two dials for shutter speed and aperture. I'm satisfied with the files my m43 puts out so the ones that come out of this is just gravy. But when I tried one of these out a year ago, it just fit my hand and how I enjoy photographing. Now what would be fantastic is if it had a feature similar to Ricoh's snap setting (to be able to choose 5-10-15ft for example).... one can wish.

While it doesn't have a manufacturer designated snap function, it does have a manual set focus option that is determined by the user instead.

From the manual:

"A manually set focus position can be locked by pressing the DELETE/FOCUS button (1.15) for more than one second. This can prove to be very useful to prevent unintentional miss-setting, especially in the case of several consecutive shots of the same subject.

• A manually set focus position is retained even after switching the camera off and back on (see p. 127). This can prove to be helpful, e.g. when several shots of subjects in similar distances are made over a longer stretch of time, and the camera is turned off in between to save battery power."​

This was introduced to the X1 with the last firmware update. Essentially, it appears to allow you to specify a set distance and lock it until you decide to unlock it. Not that much different than snap focus really. It's really more versatile since it can be set at any distance instead of distances chosen by Ricoh. ​
 
I just wished Leica had upgraded it enough to justify it to existing X1 owners. Yes, I get it, there's some plug for an evf and some extra megapixies. But the X1 was already my perfect camera for less-light party shooting and travel where even the sound of a shutter click would get you killed. But is it enough? People are offering me €700-800 euro for the bare X1 while the new one will cost me €1750. €1000 for some extra sexiness. Don't get me wrong, sexy rocks my boat. But Leica could have done better. I'll keep the X1 and stay happy with it.

Why is it photographers with blogs and on forums try to warp people's minds with this "justify" your camera or lens selection?!!!😡

Wake up! It is later than you think!

Or, just spend your life in Wal-mart, buy Ramen noodles instead of that steak dinner, drive that boring car, never ride a motorcycle (yeah, justify that!), never go on a vacation, never travel to other countries, never enjoy a good wine, never splurge a bit on your kids/grandkids, never do anything that can't be justified because it costs a bit more than A, B or even C choices out there!

Hilarious. People go to their grave without a suitcase to carry their money with them....yet, they have to "justify" everything they purchase?🙄 Prioritize one's spending, sure! But live free!

Freedom is many things including never "justifying" anything to anyone. No one should make you feel guilty for wanting and buying something, or worse, NOT doing something because THEY think it is not "justified".

I pay my bills, I buy what I want when I can afford it. Sometimes that never happens...so what? That is freedom and why articles like this always talk about "justifying" your decisions to spend your own money is beyond me.😉 Thankfully...

Anyway, Dave you are right... why is everyone so into comparing camera specs on the internet like it's a contest. I thought the whole idea was to get the camera that you felt most comfortable with, not the camera that is the best value specs wise (regardless of ergonomics, etc.) and that will make your friends love you more because you are so thrifty! Seems there is more and more nonsense on the internet daily regarding cameras.

I wouldn't judge the camera by this review (which was pretty poor IMO)... I think what bothers you is that it's a 24mm f/2.8 lens on a APS-C sensor... you are just not going to get the OOF areas you are used to with your film cameras. That said, bokeh isn't everything in photography and the X2 is capable.
