To avoid confusion just be aware that there is a very early M mount version that was never designed for with goggles - it required use of a separate top - mounted finder on the M3. I have this and its a nice lens but is f3.5. (Those "in the know" will already understand that any of the Summaron 35s of this era are excellent lenses.) I know you are looking for the 2.8 goggled version so I only mention this so you are aware. It has been known for people to be talked into buying this lens in the belief that goggles can be added.

Is it that the lens won't focus properly without goggles, or just that the field of view is incorrect without them? It seems as though the rangefinder patch is going to line up the same through the goggles or not, right? Curious about this...thanks!

it's the focusing helical, it focuses differently than a regular lens. i called focal point about removing the goggles from my V1 summilux and he told me it is impossible to do. the only way to change it is to put the lens cel into the focusing mount of a NON-goggled lens. and if you have the focusing mount from a non-goggled lens, you probably already have the rest of it!
he also mentioned that he's received 'hundreds' of them to be repaired over the years that had been hacked by local camera shops. he just sends them back and tells the customer that they're out of luck.

The camera's RF needs the goggles of the lens so that it matches the lens' focussing cam gain/movement.

That's just the 50mm close focusing dual range lens.
On a 35mm lens, goggles may be removable for storage, or for when scale focusing is fine and the bulk of the goggles is not wanted.

The question with or without goggles often returns in this forum. When the goggles are removed, the lens focusses fine, but only at infinity. The closer you come, the more it is off.
The possibility of removing the goggles on the first Summaron 35mm f/3.5 was there only for the ease of storing and transporting.

I own both the Leitz Summaron 35/2.8 and the Leitz Summicron 35/2, both with goggles and both are fantastic performers. The goggled version of the Leitz 35 mm lenses greatly work with any Leica M, except the Leica CL. I perfectly agree with the Ken Rockwell review.

As I'm scanning some negatives that I shot last year taken with my 2.8 summaron, I remembered that I love it because it is the only lens I have for 35mm that can seem to create that nice 3D effect in images that medium & large format cameras can do with ease..
Either through careless spelling, or to be humorous. 🙂 As in the Barney Google song?
I just got a goggled f2.8 Summaron for my M2 so that I can finally see outside the framelines. Looking forward to seeing some pics from it...
