I've been conflicted on whether I actually NEED a hood for my Elmar, but I came across this on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/39mm-Vented...477?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5886f3eb4d

Was wondering if anyone has bought one of these and how it compares to original hoods designed for the Elmar (or if I can even use this hood for it). It says it works for the Elmar-M. The original hood is just a bit more expensive than I'd like it to be, so I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. Not sure what the difference between the Elmar M and plain ol' Elmar is.

These 39mm hoods work on the Elmar lenses with 39mm filter threads. These are typically only the bayonet mount (M mount) Elmar lenses.

If yours is a thread mount then you will need a different, slip-on hood which includes the FISON.

Find yourself a cheap A36 clamp on filter and punch the glass out. The glass is held in with a thin threaded retaining ring. You can use a small spanner wrench, or carefully push it around with a small flathead.

Coincidentally, a 39mm threaded hood will slip right over an A36 filter, somewhat loose, but a tiny bit of electrical tape fixes that. You could use a step up ring instead to adapt something you already have around.

Another posibility, if you can find a 19mm to Series V filter adapter, you can screw this directly into the threads around the front element and use an appropriate lens hood. This also alows you to use Series V drop in filters. These were also used on the Argus C3 so you should be able to find something without too much troble.

Exactly. Leica bits and pieces turn up at all sorts of prices. Just wait patiently and one will drop into your lap, maybe for pennies...

PS Yes, you do need a lens hood, imo.

PPS Look at ebay item No:370444035081...

Thanks for the quick responses! Maybe I'll just wait and scope out ebay until I see a good deal on a FISON. Seems like the best bet and least time consuming approach.

The FISON is a sweet and compact device and because you might want to change the aperture on an early Elmar it is the best solution as you want to be able to quickly unclamp and remove it and quickly mount it again. It works for the Summaron 35mm LTM too.
