Hi All,
I've just bought a Summar complete with a couple of A36 push-on Leitz filters but haven't received them yet. Can anyone tell me if the filters are threaded to receive a hood (and if so what size), or should I try to find a push-on type hood?
Thanks.

I corrected my opinion that the FLQOO is a good hood for the Summar. It isn't. Read this:
The best hood for the Summar is the black or chrome FOOKH, in fact made for the Summaron 35mm f/3.5. The SOOMP is too big and the FIKUS is top-heavy, falls off all the time. Unfortunately the FOOKH is very rare. A Summar really needs a hood.
I recently found out however that the hood for the Elmar 35mm f3.5, the FLQOO, is too long for the Summar: it can cause vignetting. Strange - because it is a wide angle hood - but true. The FOOKH is the same as the FLQOO, but shorter, so perfect for the Summar.
Erik.

Made-it-myself 36mm clamp on hoods, where are they?

Can't believe nobody with a lathe started production on these yet!
I tried to interest fellow RFF-er Dave W. a few times, but so far no luck.
It should be really easy creating a 36mm diameter clamp-on hood from a piece of aluminium, all it requires after cutting into model is cutting a thread and fitting a retaining screw!
A nice new and shiny (or flat black) one should easily fetch USD 35 a piece, right?

My Summar arrived today: it looks nice with no haze and just the odd speckle here and there on the glass. I found some third party push on lens hoods on Ebay so I'll try one of these, until I can find a Leica version at a sensible price.
Thanks for the advice.

You don't really even need a lathe, just an old A36 Leica filter. Say a faded "A" filter, which is doubly useless as a filter. Take out the glass, make a tube of brass from sheet brass, remove appropriate paint, and solder it up.

I'll second the Walz suggestion and add Cenei to the list of brands. And there's dozen of other anonymous ones out there. It's just a question of looking a lot and handing over a few pennies.
The real problem will be finding a little leather case for it.

Out of the depths, this thread comes back.
How about the ITOOY hood? Can I use on my black-rim Summar? I have a chance to get one cheap-ish.
Thanks!

Sorry the ITOOY can not be used with your Summar.
ITOOY is for rim E39 (or A42) and Summar A36.

I have an old Walz hood deigned for a Summar lens. Walz sounds German but I think it was a Japanese photo accessory firm from "the day". Quite nice too - "funnel" shape (i.e. flared). I have never used it but have hung on as one day a nice Summar might fall into my hands. It would probably suit my style of shooting. My problem is that when I got serious about buying a Summar so did everyone else and prices rocketed up. So I put it off till I could find one at a good price. Mostly those at any where near a reasonable price are in dreadful condition (soft glass and all that).

Thanks folks,
My Summar is one of the nice ones (glass-wise). Just has a dinged front ring, but the nicest glass I've seen on one. It has one issue, separation? or similar around the edges of the front elements. Its just the junction where glass meets the barrel, so "separation" might not be the correct term. I'd think its paint loss, but there's no paint or anything floating around in this lens. I suppose it may have been disassembled and emptied at some point in its life...Anyway, I think the "separation" contributes to some flare, but nothing at all like your average summar. I actually get contrast with this one. Like I said, its one of the nice ones. Paid a moderate price for it. Just because the glass was so darn nice.
Thanks for the tip on the older thread. I'll track it down. Its so difficult to locate all these third party hoods, adapters, and what-not these days. All the camera stores are disappearing and with them, that box of knick-knacks you can rummage through. I'm talking about multiple boxes of old series X adapters, filters, hoods, lens caps, rear caps, accessory shoes, flash cords, and every other doo-dad the shop owner threw in there over the years. I miss those boxes.

I just put two rolls through my IIIf with a Summar I just bought a couple of months back and an inexpensive 34mm screw on hood (7$ or something from a company in the UK, recommended on this camera board). I'll soon develop.
Ok getting the hood on and off, but it partially blocks the viewfinder and I don't like that much. On the other hand I'm not going to pay $50 for a FIKUS or a sizable sum for a FISON slip on thing "that it can be pulled off, even if you have the thumbscrew turned down tight."

Just purchased a FOOKH for my Summar. Love it. Still on the hunt for a FLQOO to try but prices are insane these days..

Kood do a 34mm metal screw-in lens hood. I have a couple (also fits 9cm Elmar, 13.5cm Hektor). Can't, obviously, be used in combination with A36 filters. Not currently showing on Jack the Hat's website, and the Kood website shows out of stock.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this one yet.

I don’t have one, but have a couple of other hoods from this company, and those are extremely high quality, every bit as nicely done an Zeiss, Voigtländer, hoods, or hoods from that other rangefinder company.

Dimensionally, do you know if these are FISON copies?

Don't buy a FLQOO for the Summar. It vignettes. The FOOKH is just fine.
See my correction above.

I don’t know, just ordered one. Will see if my memory holds up long enough to post the answer once it arrives. My memory is a 50/50 proposition, so we’ll see.

Walz made one back in the day. It is small, discrete and well made if you can find one. I bought one many years ago when I found it in a camera store parts bin, as I always expected that one day I would buy a Summar. But most Summars tend to be a bit roached and, to make matters worse, at some point due to people proselytizing about their merit, the prices sky-rocketed so I never did. I am still looking.
A good hood alternative that I have often used with Leica lenses is to buy a modern metal hood of around 43mm and then buy a stepping ring from (in this case) 34 to 43mm. Or you could use a 39mm hood if you prefer as it is closer in diameter. The main determinant for you might be the availability of the correct stepping ring - 34mm is a bit unusual so it might be a case of beggars can't be choosers when it comes to selecting a hood diameter.
In my case I stuck with 43mm hood as that allowed me then to buy a variety of stepping rings (39-43mm, 40-43mm, 40.5-43mm, 42-43mm) and use the same 43mm diameter hood with multiple different LTM and M lenses. It works well as a solution and is quite a cheap option. If you find the right metal hood it looks good too - better than one might expect.
Something of the following sort might serve - all for a mighty cost of $2.99 plus another few bucks for the stepping ring. The one linked below for illustrative purposes is 39mm but 43mm is equally common. (The one I used was more of a "funnel" shaped hood but I seem not to be able to find that specific one on eBay these days, though there are similar funnel shaped ones available for wider angle lenses).

Or this style of hood could work if you prefer the look - though it will provide less shade.
