lens hoods for 35mm lenses

I thought I'd put this here as it's about soemthing that goes on rangefinder lenses:

I've just got an Agfa Color-Ambion 35mm lens for my Ambi Silette and was wondering if anyone knows if it's alright to use the screw-in hood that I have for my 50mm lens, or is there a screw-in hood designed for 35mm lenses which are available in 35.5mm thread?

I find a few screw on lens hoods in this thread size on ebay.
Some made by Agfa, so there should be something that works.
Otherwise, measure the outside diameter of the lens, and look for a slip on shade.

I've also seen some for 35.5mm thread Robert, what I'm wondering is, is there a difference between lens hoods aimed at 50mm lenses and those aimed at 35mm lenses and unless the hood has the focal length it was designed for stamped on it how would I know which is which? Or does it not matter?

A hood for a normal lens is likely to cause some vignetting on a wide, but there are too many variables to say there is any hard and fast rule. You just want a relatively wide, relatively shallow design. You might consider getting a 35.5mm Series adapter (probably V or VI) so you can experiment with different hood designs.

A single frame using the hood on your next roll would tell you if the hood will vignette.

Yes, I think you are right sepiareverb.

I was wondering if one of the 'oblong' hoods that are available would be alright, or would the top and bottom of the frame be more 'cut' than with a round hood?

There's no way to make any useful blanket statement since the hood itself remains a variable. You just need to get some and test them. The single frame test is good, but be sure to do it against a blank white wall and with the aperture wide open (do one without the hood as well to compare and isolate hood versus lens vignetting).

The test exposure against a white wall is the way to go, but you want minimum aperture. At maximum any vignetting may be blurred out by shallow depth of field.

I've had hoods that vignetted wide open but not at smaller apertures (at least not visibly). If you test at minimum aperture you may be surprised later. Blur is irrelevant - the question is whether it intrudes, which will be apparent in any case.

You'd think they'd have the sense to write on the hood any focal lengths they were designed for. Although I suppose Leica do that, do they?

Even if they do, I ain't selling a kidney just to get a Leica lenshood.

I've been going by the assumption that if you can't see the hood from the corners of the film gate, it won't vignette. Is that not so? I've confirmed this on some original hoods, they're just outside the area visible like that.

Hmm. If that's the case, then I think I'll regret getting rid of the plastic agfa hood that came with the camera. I seem to remember that it was a little shallower than the metal hood I have now, and possibly a little wider, although I could be mistaken.

Yes that's what I meant. Let's hear some others' opinions if that's a valid technique. It seems almost too easy.

Have you done a search? Just looking for "35.5mm" on ebay showed up a few Agfa lens hoods. You could then compare and buy...

PS Yes; they are usually wider and shallower, in other words, wide angle.

@Davdi Hughes: I've done some searches for '35.5mm lens hoods' and that's how I got my metal one. I've also seen more modern hoods that are slotted and I don't know if they'd be wide enough. The zeiss ikon hood that's on there now is up for £79.95 so I won't even think of getting that one.

I'll just keep my eye on the place to see what comes up.

Yes, well, um that's Zeiss for you but keep at it and eventually you'll see a few Agfa ones and will be able to sort out the right wide angle one you need.

Thanks for the link David. That is a plastic agfa hood, and it screws in, though it is hard to tell if it's wider/shallower than my metal hood.

There's something I'm tempted to bid for that will take most of my spare cash but if there's any 'justice' to these things the bidding should go beyond what I can afford and so I may be able to buy that hood just to compare it.
