Lens or body first?

Being a mechanically minded person, I am a sucker for craftsmanship and precision. When I buy things I like to hold them in my hands as a measure of quality. Same camp as Roger. I got into the M system, and realized its versatility to utilize lenses and bodies from various decades.

For film: the lenses make the images, the body just holds the film...

Yes, body holds the film, but I like to hold this body and have no hassle.

At work we have fancy forks which our boss brought from home. They are unbalanced. You put them on plate, they fell off. I brought simple fork from home to be able to eat my lunch and enjoy it.

With film I have tried SLRs, their VF is in the wrong place, my nose is smashed. I have tried some Bessas. They are like forks at work, disbalanced (tend to go lens up).

Every time I look at Leica M it doesn't looks sophisticated enough to be ergonomical. Every time I'm using Leica M to "hold the film" it just nothing. It is something which allows me to see how I want and holding for hours, manipulating is natural. It is like picking my nose, very easy, dare I say it. :D

But if you are well mannered gentlemen who puts camera on tripod and using cable for shutter release, I'm totally agree. Body just hold the film. :)

Instead of buying one first and then the other, save your money until you can buy both at the same time. It's quite possible that if you buy one first, you will change your mind about it by the time you get around to buying the other. You won't be able to take photographs until you have both anyway.

Brilliant image, if disgusting! I quite agree.

Is this an old Russian proverb, or your own great invention?

Cheers,

R.

Nose picking?
Google gave me 16,800,000 results 0.45 seconds. In English.

If you haven't tried it yet, first page with search results have one as seven steps instruction! :)

I do get needing to like the body. It's why I cannot use Sonys. As good as they are from an imaging perspective, I just can't stand the way they feel. I don't have that problem with Fujis, Nikons etc let alone Leicas.

So, you guys can never see a scenario where someone likes a body so much, that the lens is chosen second or vise-versa?

I have!

Not too long ago, I purchased a Fuji X body but had to wait until I could find the pre-owned Fuji lenses I wanted.

A few years ago, I purchased two micro 4/3 prime lenses before I decided on the body. I finally decided on one of the Olympus bodies instead of one of the Panasonic bodies.

For years, I have used an 8x10 camera but never purchased a lens for it because it is a pinhole camera.

Really and truly, your life won't change because you choose one system over another.
You are overthinking the problem.
But to get back to the original question, one cannot take photos without at least one of each, body and lens.

I don't think I'm overthinking it at all (and I don't have a horse in the race either way).
Of course you can't take photos without one of each, that is trivial so I moved past it and doesn't answer the OPs question at all.
But, if I was just beginning and wanted a DSLR, I love the way the Nikon bodies feel but also really want a 17 TSE for example. I would live with the Canon body and mount their 17 TSE - choosing lens first but getting both together. But if I had no need for the specialist lenses, I prefer the feel of Nikon bodies so I'd live with the lenses they offer - choosing body first but getting both together.
If it's complicated then I didn't explain myself correctly, and it's not life changing, it's a photography forum.
