hello all,
I've recently caught half-frame fever and acquired an olympus pen 'S'. It is fitted with the more common 30mm 2.8 lens. Question is, are there any hoods available for the pen 's'? I've only seen very few examples on the web. From what I've read so far olympus made push-on shades for the viewfinder pens. Not sure if it's true, but any info on this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
MIKE

It is indeed true, Mike. Olympus made a slip-on hood to fit any Pen that takes a 22.5mm filter (one & two lug first-series Pen, Pen S, et al). They're not that common, but do pop up on the auction site from time to time, which is where i found mine. The hood covers both the f3.5 and f2.8 lenses. For the record, the only exception to the above is the Pen W, which while able to take a 22.5mm filter, had a slightly different slip-on hood (a bit wider, naturally).

Here is a page that will give you an good overview of all viewfinder Pen accessories - it's a great resource. The Pen S is a great little camera.. i use mine all the time!

Thanks for the info! Although I can't read Japanese, that link is great! So basically your saying that the pen 's' I have takes 22.5mm filters? I inquired about a lens hood online but the seller didn't have a pen camera to be sure it would fit so I didn't get it. In the picture he sent me however it looks alot like the hood would fit. Any suggestions on how I can clarify that this is the right/wron hood?

Both the first Pen S (with adjustable speeds) and the later Pen EE-S take 22.5mm filters, and both can use the aforementioned hood. If it helps, the hood pictured on that page is the only hood they made for these - no other odd variants that i'm aware of. Post a picture of the hood if possible, just to confirm..

Be aware that the original Olympus 22.5mm filters are of the 'slim' variety (meaning that they have no threads on the front), and the hood fits over those filters by design. Using taller filters with that hood may cause vignetting.

the pen s hood doesn't have a locking pin like the hoods that are usually on ebay. it's just stays on by friction. there are six paired slots to help it go on and off.

if there are any machinists out there, i'd be more than happy to let you borrow mine for duplication. these are kinda rare and they go for $30! 🙁

thanks all. hood is on its way I will post a pic when it arrives.
To Cale* Just wondering why the link you provided doesn't offer any info on the pen 'd' series.

I'm not exactly sure, but this page seems to indicate a bit of interest (too bad it would take some tricky machining for that one to become functional!). Some folks (myself included) find the earlier Pens more universally enjoyable.. Maybe the simplicity factor?

Hood arrived! Here it is mounted on my pen 's'. Thanks again everyone 🙂
Now I'm patiently waiting for a Pen D2 to arrive. Half frame is great! Addiction begins shortly...

Lookin' good! Seems like the addiction is in full swing.. Keep an eye out for a Pen EE single-speed - not all that common, but really cool, cheap and they have a great fixed-focus lens. Would make for a nice 3 Pen kit!

Thanks cale, I was eyeing an EE-3 the EE line is so confusing with so many variations. I do like the idea of a true point and shoot though and I don't see them going for much. which of the EE models are the most desirable and why? BTW have you seen this site:

It doesn't just focus on half frames, mainly the film camera scene in tokyo as well as photography scene in japan. Worth a look it also has a link to a shop where they can ship japan only goods to US. Great site.
check it out!
