lenses: haves and wants

I agree, it is interesting about the lack of mention for the ZI stuff. I think once they get around and build a reputation there will be more interest. I would expect that prices will start falling as the Hong Kong prices seem to be very good. And, there will be a used market fed creating another lower price arena for this stuff.

I've been paring down.

Have:

Jupiter 8 50/2
Ultron 35/1.7

Want:
Nothing at the moment

(SLR is a different story)

Rover, I was very surprised to find that the whole Zeiss Ikon line is cheaper at Robert White in England than it is here in USA. Usually it's the other way around. So, Hong Kong is not the only place where the prices are lower. The ZI body is $145 cheaper at Robert White! The difference is not so dramatic with the lenses, but they are all cheaper across the pond. . My guess is that we are seeing the effects of the falling dollar. I think that the Zeiss/Hasselblad operation doesn't want to keep raising their prices the way that Leica does, so they are setting them high in USA out of the gate as a hedge against the dollar.

Have: 35/1,7 Ultron, 50/2 Collapsible Summicron, 90/2,8 Tele-Elmarit (thin)
Want: Nothing
Just thinking: 21 or 24 (with R-D1 attached)
Cheers, Esa

I've handled the new Zeiss 50/2. Nothing really impressive in built quality department IMHO. Took a few shots with the Zeiss 50/2 but haven't developed the roll yet.

Have: Summicron 50.

Want: Nothing at the moment.

Kris, judging by MTF numbers, the Zeiss 50 & 35 are both significantly improved over the Zeiss G lenses wide open, making them as good or better than the Summicrons in contrast at f/2. I think that this is what Zeiss is doing with the higher price point.

Well, not entirely RF, but:

Have: XPan 30/45/90, Schneider 48/58 (MF), Rodenstock 35/100 (MF), ...

Want: Zeiss Planar-T* 3.5/135 large format lens... :) ?

When it comes time to get myself an interchangable lens rangefinder, I know exactly what I'm going to be looking at.

35/1.2 CV
50/2 'cron
75/1.4 Summilux-M (I can dream.)
90/2.8 (I *can* dream, can't I?) Elmarit

There are reasonings for all these lenses. I shoot mostly street photography/nature and this range of lenses will be perfect. The 35 is plenty wide enough for landscapes, the 50 is great as an anytime lens, and the 75 and 90 will be great for portraits. I could also want the 135/4, but I'm not really sure I'd use it all that much.

The 'cron, as far as I know, will probably be the first lens I end up buying.

Haves:
CV 35/2.5 - probably will sell soon along with a Bessa R
CV 35/1.7
Canon 50/1.8

Wants:
Something supawide, maybe 15mm heliar?
Something longer ~90?
And heck, I could always use a faster 50....

You've chosen some lovely lenses, Stephanie! Maybe a little heavy on the long end... RF use seems to bring out the "wide" in everyone, and many of us (myself included) end up thinking 35 is about "normal". I mostly use 28 and 35/40, so when I put on the 50 it feels llike a short tele. Have to keep backing up to get the framing I want... But we'll all settle on some favorites that depend on our own vision, so... whatever suits ya! :)
