I think there are two kinds of photographers (well - two extremes at least, I suppose most people fall somewhere in between). Those that want to capture various (interesting/beautiful/poignant/...) things and take all the gear they need for that. And then there are those that only want to capture what fits their vision - I know that for me personally, if it can't be captured with a 24mm it is not worth capturing. If something is too far for a 24mm.. I could use a 50 or a 105 or even longer, but I know that it'll simply be a waste of film cause that photograph will never appeal to me...
(I'm talking only about personal photography here - assingments often require 50 or 85mm's but that's different)
