Let's see your Leica M

My red dot was scratching off, so I painted it black last night. Now I can't decide if I want to scrape off the script or leave it flat black.. *firstworldproblems

just over a year ago I acquired my first Leica - an M2 along with the Elmar pictured here for 600 euros. The M2 turned out to be in quite bad shape, so I had both the camera and lens serviced by Malcolm Taylor (according to him the insides of the camera looked as if it had been disassembled and the parts then thrown in a dryer, before being reassembled by a four-year-old). Since getting them back I have slowly come to the realisation that I needed a meter in my camera.

so I recently traded in the M2 (for much to less, considering what I had spent on repairing it) for this late production M5, telling myself that I wouldn’t buy a replacement for the Elmar until it had been sold (I am too scared of accidentally damaging the meter to use it). But.... then I stumbled upon this rigid Summicron, though I am still debating whether to keep it or return it for either a 50mm CZ planar or a 50mm Voigtlander Nokton ASPH.

For now, however, this is my setup:

Congratulations on having a beautiful M5.

And to think it could have belonged to James Bond 007
is icing on the cake - or at least would be for me. 😀

Thanks David! Not sure that 007 would own anything that has been designed to be as practical as the M5 though 😉

On another note: I have got previously seen that many black M5s with all black frame selection levers / self timers - is this common?

That's true Savid,

Q Branch had very few -If I recall correctly- practical devices...

I had a Black M5 eons ago in the late 70's...
it seems to me that the self timer, frame selector were black with the white detail, similar to the Black M5 posted just above yours...

Repaired / Repainted M3

Repaired / Repainted M3

Hi all,

Just got my M3 back from Alan Starkie at Cameraworks-UK, having sent it in for repairs, a repaint and modifications. It's now working like clockwork, has had mouldy shutters replaced with titanium ones, anti-reflection coatings applied to the viewfinder, a free to air frameline mask installed and doesn't look too shabby either. Couldn't really ask for more in a camera.

Yeah I'm planning down the road to send Alan my M4 with 21 Super Angulon (and maybe DR Summicron) to probably do a duracoat finish and see if he can hammer out a few dings. The guy does SUCH a great job. Each finish it beautiful but that duracoat looks amazing and would be my choice for actual usage.
