we'll see how long it really takes. leica new jersey told me they would have to send it to solms to have the top plate replaced and that would take at least 4-6 weeks, so i'm assuming i won't have it back for quite a long time.
i'll post lots of pictures of the before and after when i get it back.

nope. the shutter only seems to fire at around 1/500th and it isn't consistent. the rangefinder arm is pretty sticky too. the focusing collar on the 35mm f3.5 summaron that came with it will only move with force and it's full of hazing.
this thing is currently a paperweight.

I'd be having this apart and hammer out that plate, clean and lube it up and wack a roll through! What a great project. This is exactly what i'd like to find!!! congrats and hope the restoration is quick

I have two switars, on Alpa Mod.6 and a Mod.7, but have never seen them mounted on a Leica. Could you enlighten me as to the adaptor ?

Many years ago, the owner of Retina House in Japan accepted pre-orders of this specially made adapters. When he had received sufficient orders (I think about 25 or so, if my memory serves me correctly) he would have them made by a shop in Japan. I had two made at that time, one for myself and the other for my friend. Later, I sold a 50/1.9 Macro Switar to Tom A. and he bought such an adapter from Retina House as well. You can still see the one Tom has in his Website. I heard that Retina House had folded but I remember vaguely that someone in China had made some and sold them on *B** a little while ago. Just checked but they are gone.
The good thing about this adapter is that they couple with he rangefinder when use with the 50mm Switars but not others. As an Alpa user, you know that the Alpa 7 has a rangefinder in addition to the reflex prism. The 50mm lens has a cam to activate the rangefinder on the side. It is this same cam that links up the cam in the adapter then that of the Leica rangefinder.

Here's my faithful M7 with new-to-me Summilux 50/1,4 ASPH. The lens itself was LNIB and at quite the price.
After a lot of paring-down, I'm down to this camera/lens, my 90/2,8 and my CV 21/4; I have to say, I think I'm finally getting comfortable with my setup, and especially now with the 50/1,4 ASPH, it really feels great!

Thanks for that detailed answer, another rarity to add to the search list. I don't use the rangefinder in the Alpa 7 as my 'hold" always seems to obscure the patch window.
My 7 was one of my all time bargains being acquired in 1971 for £60 with lens (Switar) and a 135mm Dalmeyer for £17.50 and a bunch of filters no charge. I still keep the receipt.

The Alpa 7 was my first too. I had other later models but still find only the 7B and 8B could beat it with the advance levers. To use the range finder, I have to hold it vertically with the left (range finder windows) side up.
What a bargain you had even considering it was in '71. with a Dalmeyer too!
