Let's see your Leica M

No. Why would that mean Black paint?

I may be wrong but I believe Peter may be thinking of the last pre-asph Summilux which was black paint and had red numbers, sold with the M6TTL Black Paint, aka Millennium. That one looks different though, here's a kit for sale at Newoldcamera. Note the knurled focusing ring.

Historically, the specially made Leica M lenses in black paint finish had their distance scales painted in red and white, opposed to the black anodised aluminium barrel lenses from common production.

Leica continued this traditional practice for some of their special version issued late black paint lenses.

In the photo above though a simple tweak in the white balance can throw off the orange colour into a more reddish looking one. The black paint pre ASPH Summilux 50, Philip mentions above is delicious ;-)

AFAIK Leica paints the foot distance scale red on modern BP lenses, and if the focal length is engraved on the barrel that's in red too. Regular aluminum alloy black lenses have those engravings in yellow. I use three BP lenses please see the pic below: top is a 35/2 ASPH, below is a 50/1.4 ASPH and a 50/1.4 pre-ASPH. However as Dirk says above it's entirely possible that the color is a wee bit off.

I know. I own the asph 50 lux BP, pre-asph 50 BP and 35 Cron asph BP. But if a black Chrome comes up with red numbering, who am I to contradict Leica?

:D Thanks Michael, they are great to use. Did you get that NEX or something else?

Hi Peter

No ..I`m ashamed to say that I`m still faffing about.
I did have a look at a Nex in the local Curries though.

To be fair I`ve had other commitments so things are on hold plus waiting to see what Richo do with the GXR line.

I've never tried the Voigtlander 21mm finder so I cannot comment.

I think that it looks very ugly though! (I mean the roundish/squared off plastic one (if that makes sense?!) unless there is a newer one that I don't know about.)

The classic Leica offering just looks the part. The view is ok if you consider the age of design perhaps. That said, my particular finder is in pretty poor condition and certainly doesn't offer the clearest view but its still perfectly useable and looks cool with the 21/3.4 on the M4 I think.

Regards,

Simon
