i tried this sacrilegious concept recently too with my non ai 24 2.8 and a similar adapter.
it works.
i already have a good idea of the 'scope' of the faithful nikkor 24 - so i tend to use it pre focused, outdoors with the lens stopped down.

I first used this technique back in the early 1970s when I had a Leica M1 that I used primarily on a microscope. Since the M1 did not have a rangefinder, I searched until I found two adapters, one allowed a Nikon F lens to mount on an "X" body and another adapter that allowed an "X" lens to mount to a Leica M body. I no longer remember what "X" was; however, unlike the adapters of today, I do remember that this "sacrilegious concept" did not permit focusing on infinity.

Rummaging through the thread and happened to see this ... what is the thing on the shutter speed dial on the camera at six o'clock?
I always found the small dial a bit hard to use on an M2/3/4 - it works better with an MR-4 but that sort of defeats the nimbleness of the camera.
I think that lever was added to make it easier to change the shutter speed with gloves on. Perhaps Tom A will spot this thread and comment for us! That particular camera is a very special one. More details at the links below:

I looked through the threads and Tom writes: "I donated on[e] of my custom shutter speed dials for it" - so I guess it was perhaps something he made.
It looks slightly different in different photos, perhaps it was refined over the years.
