Let's see your Leica M

The family:

  • Leica IIIf (1952)
  • Leica M2 (1961)
  • Leica M5 50 Jahre "Jubilee" (1974)
  • 50mm f/3.5 (uncoated) Collapsible LTM Elmar (1945)
  • 50mm f/2 Collapsible LTM Summicron (1955)
  • 35mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH (2001)
  • 50mm f/2 Summicron-M V3 (1970)
  • 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M (1999)

All except the LTM Elmar, 90mm Elmarit-M, and 35mm ASPH have been CLAed within the last year. M5 meter works and is calibrated for modern battery voltages. At this point, the only thing I could see myself getting is a 21mm lens and finder, but I think this is a pretty full-up kit of Leica:

I bought this from the classifieds a couple of years ago. It checked off all things I wanted in a dream camera and I couldn’t resist it
M6 ttl
large shutter speed dial
.58 viewfinder
recent cla and finder upgrade from DAG
Black dot
Slotted battery cover

The M4-P is definitely a personal favorite, along with M5, then M4.

It’s the ruggedest with a total feel of steel rather than brass. Even its sound is different than the others.

Shawn, I'll buy one sooner or later but I'm concerned with the battery issue because I want a working light meter. Are you using Wein Cell batteries with yours?

M5 is an awesome shooter and I love having the meter and info in the viewfinder.

I use a 357 battery in a diodeless MR9 adapter. Needs a tiny bit of tin foil between the adapter and battery to raise it up to make contact. Works great and my meter is dead on. It might have been adjusted before I got it. Sherry confirmed its accuracy when she CLAd it.

If you go for a M5 check the 50mm framelines carefully. Make sure they are equally visible when viewed straight on. On mine they are a little dimmer on the right side but if I am off center slightly they are fine. Where this is a problem was I wanted to use a magnifier on it and that make the right side frame lines almost invisible. It is apparently something with one of the prisms and no parts available. A bummer but hopefully it doesn't get worse. The RF itself is fine and the entire viewfinder is very clean.

Later serial numbers are supposed to be better with regards to the shutter brake I think but Sherry mentioned she is seeing later ones with the same problem now too.

The post above, BP M4 with a summaron-M 35mm, the tiniest Leica lens. True pancake.

The eyelets were so thin they almost broke. They have been changed since.
