Leica LTM Let's talk Leica Standard

Leica M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
My Ic Standard that I bought from Westlicht Auctions in November 2018. I had the shutter curtains replaced by a local repairman in Osaka. It came with a Nickel Elmar 5cm 1/3.5

Beautiful... how was it buying from Westlicht? Looks like that was their last camera auction.

Thank you! I bought two cameras from their auctions, a black paint M4 in 2016 and the Ic Standard from their last auction. The M4 was really cheap compared to other local and international sellers, the Ic was a good buy, too. Peter Coeln provided an excellent customer service with great communication and quick shipping and the online bidding worked well, too.

When the auction business was completely taken over by Leica AG (they were already owner or associate of Westlicht), they deleted all customer data without any notification and asked me to re-register if I would like to participate in their new auctions.

I very much liked what Peter Coeln did to keep the brand alive by establishing the gallery "Ostlicht" and the Leica shop "Westlicht".

So, did the name "Standard" came into use when Leica standardized the lens-registration distances and no longer needed lenses to be adjusted and paired to specific bodies?

Yes, that is the origin of the name "Standard", standardization of the lens registration distance. The mounting flange was stamped with a "0" to show this.

FWIW, this is how they announced standardisation in the November 1931 catalogue;_

(Edit) I've just noticed they say a letter "o" is the standardisation mark but the cameras and lenses I've seen use the figure "0" instead. I have seen lenses from1938 marked this way but not many...

Thank you both.

Interesting to hear of "0"-marked lenses as late as 1938.
Both my 1932 and 1933 Leica II bodies and lenses have it, I don't think any of my younger Leicas do.

Another external difference between I and Standard is that the I has a rounded accessory shoe and the Standard has a square one.

The 'I' I posted was converted. It had a standardised mount. Just to confuse.

The 1938 "0" marks have worried me for ages but what can you do to a camera that means only the one part on the body and the one part on the Elmar get replaced?

I’ve been looking at Standard (E) offerings for a few weeks and just ordered one with Elmar 50/3.5 from a trusted dealer. I wanted black but chrome was easier to source - most of the black ones in my price range (and above) were pretty rough.

I’m hoping I can send it to Youxin Ye for some tender loving care and new covering. I’d also like to see if he can add stap lugs while he’s in there.

I love the simplicity of scale focus photography, and my hope is I can use this with any other LTM 50s I may pick up - I’ve wanted a Nikkor 50/2.

Is anyone still doing a belt holster for these?

I wanted one for years and I still use it regularly. Got it in bad condition, missing lens mount, pressure plate, broken leatherette and lots of missing screws. The original curtains were intact and still serve their purpose. The lack of a rangefinder really makes me think differently about taking a photo, composition and dept of field. Although I do use the VIOOH. I also like the nickel black enamel hold and feed.

Youxin Ye advises he can’t add strap lugs, so I need a plan B. I see there are aftermarket half cases on Amazon, or maybe a wrist strap attached to the tripod socket not for dangling the camera but used as a safety strap.

I bought a case for my Model 1 here...

Old 'never ready' case with the front flap removed? Watch out for fraying leather straps but the result can be quite appropriate to the camera.

Do not trust old leather straps. In my experience they can break without warning even though apparently sound.
