Leica LTM Let's talk Leica Standard

Leica M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
This works with any strap you want. I use one on a folder from the 1950s that does't have strap lugs.

Also, the Kenji half case has strap lugs built in to it. I used one with my Leica II

My Peak Design wrist strap comes with a tripod socket mount, too. I’m much more of a strap person, I think a half case with rings is the answer for me.

A good leather craftsman with the right tools and skills can make a custom case. They usually do bags and shoes, but there is a good market for custom camera cases. The camera is well worth it. Fitting strap lugs is not a good idea, it decreases the value.

I did not purchase a collectible quality camera, so spending as much on a case as I did the camera does not make sense to me. Also, the decrease in value for a collector (already minimal in this case) would be offset by the increase in usability.

I had just consigned an expensive camera and had a bit of money in my pocket when I noticed this little gem sitting at the back of the store’s Leica shelf. Oddly enough it seemed to be working fine and the bodies price was just under $500 so I bought it on a whim - it fits in a small belt pouch and I now carry it almost every day, usually with the 50/2.8 Elmar.

What I love is the thoughtful approach it imposes; exposure, focus, even framing to some extent, all have to be decided before you ever look through the viewfinder. Paradoxically, it’s very quick to use in the street once it’s preset - almost like an auto-focus DSLR except you don’t have to wait on the auto-focus. Discreet too since it’s only at your eye for the instant you’re actually making the exposure.

This one’s a 1931 Non-Standard but the focus is close enough (2“ close at 15“ with a 50) that I’ve never lost a shot because of it. The viewfinder and winding mechanism are considerably newer than the rest of the body but I kind of like the fact that someone kept this 94 year old camera going for so many decades past where it would have been thought obsolete.

I have always gotten great satisfaction out of using scale focus cameras going back to my first non-Instamatic camera - a Speed Graphic, a Pen S that was lent to me as a young teen, my great-grandmother’s Argus A and the Retina 1a I carried in my briefcase for many years. I know this Standard will be just as rewarding.

Youxin Ye advises he can’t add strap lugs, so I need a plan B. I see there are aftermarket half cases on Amazon, or maybe a wrist strap attached to the tripod socket not for dangling the camera but used as a safety strap.
You can get the bits, even including tools, to rustle up a leather wrist strap pretty cheaply and easily, though I must confess that my Contax is so heavy I use the paracord one even though the leather one looks better.

Ken - I wonder if that only applied to the Standard? But that would be strange as the bodies were basically the same - except for the rangefinder.
I bought a couple of lugs and got the late Leica repairman Horst in Vancouver, to add them to my II(D) - they work just fine

He said the issue was that Leica lugs were brass and riveted, the ones he can get now are steel - the tool used for Leica lugs would be damaged trying to rivet them. DAG used to have lugs with threaded studs but they are all gone.

It seems to be! A little chrome spotting and some lens haze, but it sounds and feels great. It has a name lightly scratched into the bottom in two places, but even though my name isn’t “John” it’s not objectionable. (It was disclosed before sale.) I suspect that knocked a fair amount off the value.

I’m hoping the lens cleans up, shooting with uncoated glass is a pleasure. Plus I’d like to find a coated LTM Nikkor to use on it, too.

Were they common? I haven’t heard of 35mm fixed finders before - but I’m just starting on my Standard journey. I feel myself falling down the rabbit hole…

Absolutely not common and I think I saw it for sale at Westlicht. Forget I ever mentioned it!

Just checked in Laney. He mentions a few Standards made with a 35mm finder. In effect this is a variation of WEISU fixed in place of the standard 50mm finder.
