I guess you could get a "Harry Potter Argus C3 rangefinder" for under $100, do some testing on your own -- and it's covered under eBay Buyer Protection! Surely you could save yourself a grand or two.

Actually you can buy some of the veneers laid up on fleece back. They are very thin, but you have to buy 4x8 sheet.
