Too bad you're not hitting Salamanca - it's just over the border, and a beautiful city with the world-famous university, siamese-twin cathedrals (one Romanesque, and small(er), one late Gothic and much larger, sharing a wall), the Plaza Mayor, and a Roman bridge over the Rio Tormes. Although the street life may not be as vibrant right now since the university is not in session for the summer.

Thanks for the suggestions. We did not make it to Salamanca on this trip (we went to Sevilla instead), but we loved Portugal so much that a return visit is planned, with an excursion to the north of Portugal which could include an excursion over to Salamanca. 🙂

Sevilla is lovely too- you didn't suffer for your choice 🙂 . I assume you took in the cathedral - did you get to the bullring, or to the Plaza de Espanya (stupid thing won't let me type the enye)? There is a fascinating Jewish quarter and I believe several former synagogues remain, although they may have all been converted into churches.

Yes, we saw the cathedral, as well as the Alcazar and its beautiful grounds. We saw the Plaza de Toros but did not go in. Most enjoyable, though, was simply walking around the city, especially in the evening. Our hotel was in the old Jewish quarter, so we spent a lot of time wandering around there.

My wife is Portuguese and I've visited Portugal—and Lisbon—several times. But my favourite pictures are my uncle's Kodachrome slides from his visit there in 1963. Not much has changed!

Beyond gaphities are more common on the walls of the streets, we also no longer use donkeys as transportation in Lisbon 🙂 Perhaps in inland areas of Portugal. Good photos in general and search Porto city (also from Portugal) for your next vacations and photographic theme.
