Long Nose Nikon 50mm f/1.8 question ?

I just read a thread here, that mentioned a "Long Nose" Nikon 50mm f/1.8...

I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Ais that has a recessed front element..maybe 3/4 inch....

Is this a long nose?
And what is the benefit?
A different formula? or just house?
It is a great lens, sharpness and contrast wise. At any f/stop

Yes, I believe the long nose is the one you have. The formula is different than the later ones. That Marco Cavina guy had a write up, but I can't find the link presently. http://www.marcocavina.com/articoli_tecnici_fotografici.htm

Now, what is the difference from the NON-LONG nose... all had 6/5 elements/group design. coatings changed, and weight changed... close focusing also changed with various versions...

Did the IQ change other than the newer coating towards favoring skin tones.??

There were two pancake versions, one a "Japan only" release, which I have; and the other was the "new" AIS. This latter version only focuses to .6 meter, not .45 (~24" versus 17") and the latter also has a reputation generally of not being as sharp a lens. I love the Japan only pancake version I have. The other versions are Series E releases which are made from less expensive materials.

Sorry to send you on a wild goose chase, I looked through cavina's site and I couldn;'t find it. I remember reading it and the graphics, maybe he took it down, or maybe I'm mistaken. I have had the lenses and I have the scans, the one you have is better than the Metal series e and the af-d nikkor (I didn't like them). I prefer the 50mm f2 to it but it's a matter of taste, the 1.8 is more punchy but I like the color of the f2 and the high resolution.

No Problem...
It is a nice lens, Sharp and and has great looking Bokoh design.
Actually I got this lens here, it has a very small bit of fungus (very small dot size) that I had cleaned up, but some coating was affected. and paid $35.00 + $20 for a Cleaning. There is no effect as far as I know so far.. even at f/1.8. Here are a few recent photos on my FE and Tri-X

The lens pictured has that little step-down at the outside of the filter thread ring. Later versions do not have that. I have a LN and it's very nice. (Prefer my f/2, but for no logical reason. Usually because of the way it paints when wide open.)
