But too many people forget that.

My parents used cameras to record special family events, a new car, a vacation.. they weren't professional photographers, they were just people. I did the same with my children and still record events. I also like to do creative things with my camera/s [I have a lot of flea market cheapies]. For a while I got excited that I could get apps on my android phone and play with photos.. then like any new toy it got old and while I still use it to capture things I am less inclined to tinker. I have Lightroom etc.. for that 😀

That's nothing against rff - it's a gear forum after all and a nice one.

I think it is a little bit more. Much of the discussions here are about photography. Some light-hearted and many discussions are serious.

On other forums that get beyond gear, it is "Hey. Look what I did." The response is is "How did you do that? What settings do I use?" Followed shortly by a lot of copycat photos. The people who "discovered" the technique or style have no idea that photographers have been doing the same thing long before the internet was "invented by Al Gore." 😀

How often do you see people on this forum concerned about copying another forum member so they can be cool too? 🙂

you're right of course. in most gear forums a discussion like this wouldn't even take place...

I would not say photography is devalued as long as there are serious photographers. When was painting devalued? People made terrible paintings right along with all the great painters you can name. Good art, no matter the medium, always exists along side of junk.

For gear related stuff i have yet to experience a case where nobody could help me out here, so i never use other forums. As far as photography in general is concerned, there are some alternatives (flickr might be dead, but some groups are still a good resource).
