I run sites myself and if somebody told me of a spelling error on a landing page I'd correct it same day. Jorge hasn't done that in about six months since I pointed it out, and that makes him seem like somebody who is not on top of his site.

As well as the spelling Jorge needs to sort out the speed issues, make the navigation consistent and rationalize the forums.

Thank you Jorge for setting up this site, I like what you write also, but it's time to get the professionals in to take it to the next level.

I've no idea of the economics of running this sort of site, but I'm willing to bet that Jorge isn't about to go vacationing with Mr. & Mrs. Gates any time soon.
Many people have made the point that this is a free site. Free. All of this great stuff and interaction. Free.
Jorge, how's about charging us a few bucks a month after the first month? People just naturally don't value what comes too cheaply.

As I see it, the problem with this approach is that deciding when or if to move a thread turns the moderators into quasai-censors. Their judgement, no matter how dispassionately made, enters subjectivism into the decision process. No matter how objective they try to be, different moderators will have different "standards" as to whether and when to move a thread to the OT "completely different" forum.

If we apply your approach then in reality, this thread should have been moved after the second or third post.

I do run sites. This one is crawling with advertisers (sponsors) and easliy makes a profit from what they pay.

The vBulletin software is off the shelf and very inexpensive, and the server rental is really not very much at all.

Once it's set up, a one day job at most, Jorge can carry on with his day job, leave his volunteer mods to keep things humming and invoice the advertisers.

I like RFF and the people here but it has many faults technically.

If a thread disappears and you want to get/stay involved, you'll know where to find it: on the "Forums" page. Since it is hidden from view on the "Active Forums" page, most will be spared from having to view it, and visitors may miss it too. What would happen if the person who starts a thread has the ability to select and delete any posts within their thread? Has this been tried anywhere else?

Is it so profitable that he can bring in the professionals? Do the advertisers seek him out?
What you describe is a model for a casual enterprise that is self-supporting. If it were much more, he might not head off to that day job.
 
if Jorge is anything like me (and hopefully he's much better), he wouldn't think of charging the members.. not for economic reasons, but because of the 'ownership' that people will feel entitled to.. since he is the sole owner of the site, he can do anything he wants with it.. charge some money, and he loses control.. I can respect that

That's a major concern. There have been a couple of particularly bad examples just today, to include foul language to test the moderators on otherwise okay threads.

Since you work in the field naturally you'd notice any technical faults. I've been here for a few years and haven't noticed these staring-me-in-the-face horrible faults you speak of. I think it's kinda like watching law shows on TV; the average Joe is entertained, while the attorneys in the audience probably laugh and cringe at the same time at some of the goings on.

Maybe what we need is to develop an alternative method of sellling in which split-second timing isn't as critical. This doesn't HAVE to be eBay Junior, ya know!

When I've sold things on RFF, I've usually done it on the basis of "best offer received by date X," setting date X far enough in the future that reasonably regular visitors have a chance to stumble across it.

It's just common sense that if you want to get the best price for your item, you want to give people plenty of time to up the price.

Thank you George, I understand and agree with you 100%.

Example: A new guy with an FSU camera comes to RFF. Which forum does he look in? Would it be covered in 'Russian Made Rangefinder Cameras' or might it be in 'Other, including Fed, Zorki...'.

Just one small example. There are many more.

Us oldtimers don't even notice the faults any more. But for new people there is a lot of stuff that needs fixing.

I've noticed that some people have been mildly flamed for posting links to their eBay auctions. Is this a definite no-no for the RFF buy/sell forum?

In the interests of healthy debate - I do not want to let this statement pass without a counterpoint.

I regularly post here (although I do not consider myself a madman). And I do plenty of photography - check my Gallery. I regularly contribute to or initiate W/NW threads and just posted my three entries to the RFF Contest.

In fact, I got into hot water with some here when I posited that I thought the main purpose of the site was to display our photographs.

So, with all due respect, I refuse to accept that being a regular thread poster here means I am a non-picture taking poseur!
