This idea is lost on so many people. It may sound like 50 is a lot, but it's a small step from the 36mp we've had available for years.

(imagine 50mp is about the size of the white frame)
It's a lot
I use 16MP and 24MP cameras. 50MP is nearly triple the density of one of my cameras and double that of the other.
Your graphic is visually confusing in that it illustrates what we are used to seeing when comparing sensor sizes.
For a given sensor size the pixels cover the same area whether it's 12,16,24,36 or 50... just decreasing pixel size and increasing density.

You forgot to ridicule photon counting imaging technology and Eric Fossum's Quanta Image Sensor in your post.

That first paper is from January, 2015. Talk about up-to-date!
Thanks for the links.

Honestly, I'd be much more excited if these 50 million pixels were larger pixels on a medium format sensor. Give the Hassy/Leaf/Phase crowd a bit more competition.

Call me simplistic 50Mpixel is only 50% larger than a 24Mpixel.
Printing at 300dpi for a 3:2 ratio sensor;
24MPixel gives you a 20 inch wide print
50MPixel gives you 28.9 inch print
As I only print 8x12 inch prints, my 16Mpixel is more than enough for me and leaves some room for cropping
