LTM lenses on M body

How do you use the LTM lenses on a M camera?

You have one adapter for each lens and keep it mounted on the lens or do you leave the adapter on the camera body?

What if you have a mixed set of lenses (M mount and LTM)?

Thanks,
Rob.

Hi Rob,

I suppose the answer is "it depends". I have four Leicas - two LTM, and two M. I have a range of LTM and M mount lenses that I use on all bodies. I certainly don't have a mount for every lens.

A practical example. If I go out "heavy" with my IID I take the body with 50mm Skopar attached, and a VC 75 and 28. The 75 wears the 50/75 adaptor ring, and the 28 the 28/90. The two lenses are then kept together by an M b2b ring. I can swap lenses by simply unscrewing the mounts and mounting the lenses on the IID body.

If I go out another day with my M2 instead I can take exactly the same two lenses and use them, complete with mounts, on the M body.

Best of both worlds.

Regards,

Bill

😱 you're a genius... I didn't even know the existence of such a M b2b ring..

Genius? I wish!

It took me over a year to work out that the two b2b rings I owned I could use for LTMs as well as for Ms, just leaving the adaptor ring "in" the coupling ring... :bang:

It's a mystery to me why they are not made anymore. I don't know of a better way to carry two lenses securely and in a "compact" way.

Here's a picture showing one of the rings in use:

The right hand pouch is holding a 90 Elmarit-M and a 35mm Summicron IV. The left a 135 Tele-Elmar M. The two lenses combined are almost exactly the same length as the 135 on it's own. The pouches are Billingham AVEA3 of course.

Bill

This really depends on what M camera you have. If it's a Bessa, there's no problem in randomly interchanging lenses and adapters, or leaving the adapter on the body.

But if your M has automatic frame selection (e.g. Leica, Konica), the adapter needs to correspond to the lens' focal length. One adapter per LTM lens and keeping that adapter on the lens makes most sense.

Agree with Peter. For 17 years I used an M3 with five LTM lenses and the three adapters I needed most: 50, 35 (no frame lines) / 135, 28/90. Adapters left on lenses for quick changing. I now have an M2 with one M lens and four LTM lenses. Same three adapters, removed only when using lens with Zorki.

you can buy an original Leica or built it by your own.
Glue (and screw !! best with immersible screws) two cheap M back caps (rebuilds are about 2-3 €) together. Cover the screws with black textile sellotape et voila 😉
Not so elegant like the original but as functionable. 😉

BTW: @ BillP what is the pouch für the M7 ? I don´t know it and it seems very practical.

Seems like this forum is a very high IQ 🙂 or maybe I'm getting dumb.. again I had not thought to this simple solution..

bill, what's that pouch carrying the m7? that looks ideal for me.

thanks,
chris

very new to the adaptor, just wonder how tight should I turn the screw mount lens into the mount?

Porblem is I just acquired an original Voigtlander mount together an 15/4.5 yesterday, and find out the lens couldn't sit exactly level, i.e. the white dot not in the 12 o'clock position...and as a result the build-in hood which is fixed and can't not turn is not level as well, any solution? the case look like I have to turn it even more harder in order to get it there, just wonder...do I really need to turn it that hard so that I can never get the lens off the adaptor again??

Thanks

No need to return the lens, this is common with SM to M adapters.
With most lenses, it isn't an issue, the 15mm Heliar is a rectilinear wide-angle, and the image on the film will be slightly tilted as well.

It took me several rolls to discover this with mine, but it is not enough to be noticeable most of the time. I like to print full frame, too.

😀

I just had to double-check that it isn't 1st.April today. I suppose this is the same sort of problem as the image being upside down if you get a second-hand view-camera . . . ?

You can disassemble the 15mm Heliar to adjust it to be used on either leica or Voigtlander M Mount adapters.

As for cheap M adapters (since I'm using a Voigtlander, the predefined frameline setting doesn't affect me) I have purchased from this guy in Iowa, since that's where I live. The quality is good. Perhaps better than the aluminum ones from Hong Kong. His seller name is Kawaphoto.

Hi,
I had the same problem. The tolerances required are exacting . I happen to have a diamond plate, but if you use some 600grit paper from an autobody shop on a flat surface ( eg.piece of glass) and rub that adaptor around for a couple of minutes, you'll be surprised to see that there are indeed slight highpoints that show.
I rubbed my adaptor only until just some of the plating started to look a little thin, and that was enough to allow the lens to swing that extra 1/8" or so, and bring it into alignment.
Hope I haven't left too many eyes rolling in horror !

Hi I think this is indeed a great idea.. 🙂

tried to ask for advice from the shop where I bought it from last night, arrived too late and they closed...Will try to get there again this evening, not so sure if I can resist to droping the $$ for the 12/5.6?!

BTW, the mount adaptor I am using also a brand new Voigtlander one, not so sure if its just mine or a usual problem, forgove me I am just entering the RF world and this is my 1st RF.
