I bought a generic LTM to M mount adapter to use my Canon LTM lenses on my M6. The adapter is inscribed with the description "M3" on it and also its place of manufacture i.e. "Japan".

I find that the adapter will not mount onto my M6. I must confess that I dared not force it in lest it damages the camera mount.

I thought that there is only one type of M-mount and an adapter for an M3 mount should be usable on an M6 too. It seems I am mistaken.

How many types of adapters are there anyway ?

An M mount adapter is an M mount adapter. The only difference in the adapters themselves is which set of framelines will be triggered.

I think I would try to gently mount the adapter itself (with no lens attached) and see if it will drop into place. You are correct. Use no force. If it won't attach, something is surely wrong.

I had the same problem with an unnamed adapter bought off ebay. If it doesn't fit, don't force it.

Get yourself a voigtlander adapter, they seem to be consistently right good and they're cheaper than used Leitz adapters.

Also, if you're using it for a lens with focal length 28mm upwards make sure you get one that brings up the right framelines for your lens
