Lulu is shipping "The Book"

Not having access to Lenswork, can anyone post an image of how that Lenswork format looks like? The descriptions don't make it very clear to me.

Ohoh! Are there cracks appearing in the walls? Peter, you just had to ruin my day, right? :p
In the cold light of morning it looks the same. Maybe I'm being too critical? Mine shipped from somewhere in Virginia and I think these books are printed as one-offs. If no-one responds to the color issue today I'll start a new thread asking the question - I just don't want to have a zillion threads about the book - we have two already - that's enough.

To anyone who's reading this without reading my post above - my RFF book has a very slight pink cast in the B&W prints. Anyone else have a similar "discoloration"?

Finally!!

Finally!!

My RFF book arrived today!! :D

I've got to say that, overall, it really looks great -- remarkably so considering how we put it together and that it was our first experience with publishing a book like this.

I do see a little shift towards magenta in many of the B&W photos. Not bad, but it's there. On my copy it's more pronounced towards the inner margin. The magenta cast is very slight and if Peter hadn't already mentioned it, I might not have noticed for awhile.

The cover is printed separately, probably on a different printer and at 600dpi. The front and back covers look terrific -- thanks to Nick Graham (chenick) for the front cover and Todd for the back cover design. And to Graksi for a great cover photo.

Having the book in hand and studying it closely, I think I'd make a few minor changes in layout. I'd have the photographers' names in a bit more from the edge and reduce the font size by a couple of sizes throughout. I think it looks good as is, but that it would look even better with those changes.

BTW, I had contacted Mike Johnston to see if he'd like a copy and when he seemed interested I had one copy sent him. He received it and said it looked *very* close to a professionally-printed standard photo book. There is some possibility he may mention the book and our project in one of his future Sunday Morning Photographer columns.

I'm not disappointed. Three cheers!!!

Gene

Since lulu prints on-demand, could the magenta shift be mentioned to them to be rectified for subsequent printings?

I haven't got my copy yet, but I wouldn't say you're being too critical, if you've seen other photography book/magazine and you've noticed this...in fact if I was running lulu I'd be interested in hearing your (our?) comments about this. I'm sure they are trying to deliver the best quality product they can and there might be a change in their process that can avoid such colour casts on B/W photos.

cheers!

OK, I am glad that other people are seeing this as well. I have written to Lulu, and received an autoreply that "support" issues are handled in their online forum. I'll wait a while to see if they send an individual respose to my email, which was focused around trying to avoid the issue in subsequent print runs.

I assume that because there are color photos in the book the whole book is printed using a color process and that is the cause of it.

The colour of light...

Okay, NOW I have my copy (9 days PAR AVION to Canada?!) and I although I see a magenta cast while sitting at my desk (under florecent lights), when I move to the window it looks blue!!!

BTW this book is absolutely fantastic!!! Thanks to everyone who worked on this. If anything it'll be nice to have a printed record of this fine forum for when I abandon technology and move to a shack in the wood. :D

BTW2 - who has the "Juan Valdez" coffee cup lens shade on their Bessa R!! That's hilarious! :D

As peter pointed out, that's me, best of breed, Colombian coffee 100% :D

Im full of envy (the good one) from all of you who already have seen the book I will have to wait 4-6 weeks to see it myself :(

My copy of the book arrived today! I'm impressed with its overall quality and very happy to have it in my library. I agree that a few changes in font types and sizes might be considered, but that's all hindsight. Overall, the book is remarkably good. Congratulations to all who were involved in the project.

Anyone from Europe got his/her copy already? I'm getting restless.... :)

Here is the link to Lenswork, where you can DL a pdf:

http://www.lenswork.com/

I tried to attach the pdf, but none of the features, smilies, formatting, attachments, etc. seem to be working.

RayPa, thanks for the link.

Know I understand what was meant by the LensWork format. Seems like a nice format but whether it will be useful for the plans I have... I'm not sure. But it's good to have several ideas available.

Well I got an email response from Lulu support with respect to the slight pink/magenta color cast on the B&W prints in the book. The email is self-explanatory and is cut'n'pasted in its entirety below:

Peter,

We have a color process for printing so black and white are printed by mixing colors. There is a slight shift to red with lighter colors and that is just the process that we have now. There is really nothing that we can do to change this at this time.

Regards,

Lulu Support

Thanks for confirming this, Peter. That's what I thought but wasn't sure. It's like using a home col inkjet printer to print B&W -- hard not to get a slight cast to it.

The B&W photos that fared the best were those in sepia -- I assume because that's a form of col and the printer handles it better.

Food for thought.

Peter,
Did they mention the best way to submit B&W images? Should they be jpeg grayscale or color? What color space? i.e. sRGB or whatever?

No Mike. The focus of my email was "can you fix this going forward for future print orders of this book?" and the answer to that (at least in the short-term) is no. The full text of the email from Lulu is reproduced above.
