Lynx 5000e - First Rangefinder - Some Questions/Problems

Hi everybody!

I always dreamed about having my own rangefinder. I did not have to reach far: I discovered an old Yashica Lynx 5000e at my mother's house. After talking to her about my discovery she was so kind to give it to me today as a gift. So now I am the proud owner of a great fixed-lens rangefinder which seems to be in good shape generally.

Some issues remain (I did not shoot film yet... I'll do it tomorrow)

1. The shutter speed selection seems to work well... at first sight. When it comes to speed of 1/8sec. and more, especially with at a speed of 1/2 or 1/1 the result becomes unpredictable. When selecting 1/1 it happens that the shutter takes 1.5-4 seconds to close again.... how can I fix this problem? I expect it is not that easy...

2. Which batteries should I buy for the meter? luckily, my mom didn't forget to put them out before deciding not to use the camera anymore...

3. Do you have a recommendation for a fitting flashlight?

I am really looking forward to take part in the RFF-Community now. I've read the forum for some time now an must say that I've seldom seen a nice community as it can be found here.

Agree to both Jeff and Richard. My 5000 also suffered from slow speeds syndrome, but I managed to clean it myself (described in Repairs sub-forum). Not so scary as it seems, but if it's your mom's gift, you can also consider option sending it out for a good CLA, before using it at full throttle. Definitely worth it.

My mom said there was also some kind of problem with the meter. She said she sent it to the manufacturer years ago but they didn't really manage to fix the problem... but she wasn't sure what the problem was in detail. I'll have to wait till the PX640-adapter for the batteries arrives.

@btgc: can you give me the link to the repair-guide you mentioned? I didn't quite get to the point with the yashica-guy...

Geff, it's not guide, just some notes....hope this helps. If you'll look how to open shutter, Dan Mitchell's site will be helpful; finally, it's variation of Copal shutter so common notes on Copals apply here.

Now I know why I was told the meter had a problem... Well: you insert the batteries. Everything works great! The values seem reasonable.

You come back a few hours later and BOOM: batteries completely empty... So they are leaking energy. I have to find out how to fix this (or where the problem really is...) and then my camera should work great in day-to-day use.

Sounds like you have a short between the battery terminal and frame or a shorted meter switch.
