I'm not impressed by the iPhone. I use it when it is the only option, but it's not very good in absolute terms. Here is no limitations on using of iPhone for video I have noticed as television professional.
For home video use.![]()

But I rarely if ever use flash - like many Leica M users do. Yet I do not see Leica remove the flash sync. Well, to be fair, they did remove the LCD for non-chimpers.No, I don't, but I guess my point is that some people use video and some do not. I would imagine that video does not appeal to the majority of M users. Most people who care about video will be utilizing something that excels at video (as opposed to just doing video in its most basic of forms). Myself, I'm no longer a M user because I need other options the M doesn't offer. However, I respect the M for what it is. Now, for me, I'll take a 50mm Q and be very, very happy.

The M needs to have a good video option..w/4K..
Really..how hard is it to put up an up to date video option in any of these M's and discretely too....
I agree, and imagine it isn't that hard to put at least really good HD video in.
I'm mostly a stills shooter now, but when I go to certain events video is nice to have and I really dislike carrying multiple cameras.

Well I just got the details. Definitely no video. It does have live view with peaking and wifi though. Similar sensor to the SL so I assume it's just a tweaked variant.

Do you carry a phone with video? Do you carry a film camera?

Indeed. SL sensor with optimized microlenses for (legacy) M lenses.

No I don't. And does your cellphone take lenses up to 800 mm and down to 18?Do you carry a phone with video? Do you carry a film camera?
I really pi**ed off that the thing has no video. It is a silly Luddite move to go back to the stone age.
The M needs to have a good video option..w/4K..I shoot 50/50 stills and video...would like to have an M for an easy simple to use music vids in full frame...and be able to pull individual still shots out of it if possible...just making life easy ..and sometimes..you just don't want to look thru a screen all the time..so a rangefinder is a nice option...
Really..how hard is it to put up an up to date video option in any of these M's and discretely too....
L is holding out on us and stretching their development timeline to make more bux..by withholding a fully capable M for those users that don't want to buy an SL and want a completely versatile rangefinder package..not a stripped down model in the style and format of their recent 28mm f5.6 release..
But I'm sure they just want us to buy 2 cams..the M..and the SL..so they will profit morso w/2 sales..instead of 1....and the M wont be cannibalizing the SL video sales either..
Understood, but I just think hoping that Leica is going to implement modern features, into a camera that hasn't changed much over its long existence, might be futile. They put it into the M240 and now they are not putting into another M. Perhaps we will know why in two days.

The question wasn't directed at you. I've met its intended recipient in person and was asking a question based on his usage.

I do, and the phone does take nice video.
But I can't use my Leica glass on my phone.
Mostly shoot with film Ms, but for events I bring a Sony mirrorless to shoot video.

What do you want out of your video shots? Video snapshots or professional looking documentary style videos? An M camera can produce that full spectrum. Capturing nice looking video requires more than handholding the camera. That means a tripod, which I do not carry, or a gimbal. I'm satisfied with what I can capture from a smartphone for a video snapshot. For the next step up there are now 3-axis gimbals for a smartphone under $300 that will take video capture to the next level. Those gimbals are small enough you probably won't mind carrying it. Check out a Zhiyun Smooth-II.
Nailing focus with my Canon 6D in video mode at a large aperture (which is where a FF video looks awesome), with something other than a WA lens, is difficult to pull off hand held.
If I'm serious about shooting video an M would not my first choice. With today's smart phone video quality, video in an M camera seems neither fish nor fowl.

I really enjoy the video in my M240. I don't have to carry a second camera or a cell phone. My cell phone actually doesn't go with me everywhere I'm shooting. It is actually not essential.
Sure, the video can be improved. That is of course important for Leica to do. But, to state that most folks don't use the video in the M240 because, it was not very good or was poorly implemented is not a reason to delete the feature but, more a reason to improve it.
I know for sure the new M will not use the SL sensor. I hope the 36xx designation of the camera means that it will have a 36MP sensor. But, if the camera uses a sensor (not the SL) that is only about as good as the SL with no video, I'm not sure I'll upgrade to a camera with fewer features for the sake of being able to be part of the "essential" Leica fanboy club.
I'm hoping that Leica listened to customers and removed the video button and not the actual freaking video! Come on Leica, your partner is Panasonic. They are doing killer video cameras.
Hoping that video is nicely nested in the Drive menu.

My source from Leica says no video and it's a tweaked SL sensor. Tomorrow at 3pm it'll be official.

I think what the vast majority of professional photographers want is basic PJ skills in one body and not some silly idea of a "pure" camera. Y'know, the standard that the 5DMII set 8 years ago? Something that doesn't include opportunity cost in addition to the outlandish price tag? Because, y'know, maybe there's some older PJs out that that really enjoyed working with Leicas in the film age, because that form factor fit the way that they use a camera, but are also having to modernise and take video while on the job as well? People who aren't really satisfied by the X-Pro line?
I dunno - just some silly suppositions and not any actual experience coming into play here.
But yeah, screw the people that were formative for the company and their legacy - let's cater to the whims of the genty cat and wife photographer market.
The quote above yours answers this question. If the "form factor fit the way they use a camera" I doubt that adding professional video support devices would help them achieve their vision. The NYT and Washington Post aren't going to use shaky, out of focus video because someone wanted to use a Leica instead of a Sony A7SII instead.

We're talking about simply the ability to capture something extreme or unexpected (like the Paris attacks) as it happens - not a sticks on lockdown/ENG situation. They'll use anything in that case - even iPhone video. It's advantageous for a photographer to be able to switch to that at a moment's notice and not have to stop using one camera to dig out another.
The D5 and 1Dx II already do these things. Photographers who use the M10 can deal, it's just a bunch of well heeled enthusiasts anyway.

I would like a digital M to keep is all the same family, especially with a sensor designed to work with my glass.
A digital M and a film M.
But the video in the M240 doesn't do it for me.
And I love rangefinders and prefer it over using manual focus lenses with an EVF.
