M2 for a song. I'm a rangefinder shooter again!

I just bought an M2 for $150. It's a little dirty, has a few dings, the second shutter curtain shows the seam after firing a shot, and the self-timer lever doesn't work. But other than that, it's a fully functional M. The RF is clean, the advance lever is buttery smooth, shutter has no leaks or cracks, and slow shutter speeds fire instantly and at steady speed. The vulcanite is largely pristine. Put a test roll through with no issues. I am happy as a clam.

Wanted to share this in response to the older thread about the person who bought an M3 from an unsuspecting seller. These things do happen. My seller was an old friend who works for a camera store, so he had to know the FMV of M bodies. His words, "I'm just going to put it on KEH, but I'd let it go for $150." How could I say no?

I shoot weddings for a living. Did all of 2008 with an M8, finally selling it at too much loss in order to fund a 5DMKII. What they say is so true - never sell a Leica. I miss that piece of junk M8 every day. For as beautiful as the imagery was, I became frustrated by the high-iso banding, the buffer lock-ups, and a shutter which more closely resembled the sound of Stephen Hawking being killed with a staple gun.

So I've spent the last two years being uninspired by my blissfully competent SLRs. The economy being what it is, I couldn't even afford a used M6, let alone an M9. But this, this is the gods saying life is better with rangefinders. Luckily I didn't sell my 21 Elmarit and 90 cron (both pre-asph), so now I just need a 35 or 40 to complete the set.

Little spots of grime, scrapes off with a fingernail, anyone know how best to clean this?

Second curtain not closing all the way after firing, didn't affect the images though.

This was the only damage I could find to the vulcanite.

Hah, its good hearing they are out there. It keeps the hope alive that I may be lucky enough to come across something like that some time.

In the end, I'm just too cheap to every put the money down for a full priced one. I spent 6 months agonizing over the $500 I spent on a used D70 and a few lenses which I got back into photography. 🙁 I've come to accept this as much as it pains me.

Until then, I'll keep shooting whatever cheaper stuff I can find. 🙂

Hope you don't mind I copied that. I want to use it in case I buy a Leica and then want to sell it on ebay. 😀 😀

Actually, that's a nice looking camera. I've always said I don't want a Leica because of the cost, but for a deal like that I might well spring for one after all. Glad it is giving you good photos.

Congratulations! And poor Stephen Hawking, what a way to go... 🙂

Better than the "... sound of strangling a small animal"? 😛

The 2nd curtain is supposed to be like that AFAIK.
If you don't like it, you can adjust the curtain brake to let the 2nd curtain travel further.
It is the biggest screw at the bottom.

Great deal.

The M2 looks to be in quite good shape too - far better than my chrome M2 which had a dent the size of a crater in it and was worn down to the brass on the top plate!

Enjoy using it.

Yes, be careful with the strap lugs---looks like one is loose. The older lugs are fairly soft, too. When the lugs on my M2 were nearly worn through, I had them replaced with the harder steel ones used on the later M's. If it were my camera, I'd have the lugs replaced rather than just tightened. Probably not much difference in cost.

@Nokton48 - Thanks for the tip. I'll try that.

@JSU - I checked both strap lugs, and short of taking a pair of pliers to them the lugs don't even budge.

@Axiom - Good to know. Appreciated. This is my first film M so I was just going off the used buyer's guide on Stephen Gandy's site. He listed a visible second curtain as something which indicated a shutter needing service.
