M240 and Internet sales tax: Will phone orders be taxed?

First, where's the quote from?

Second, there is a million dollar lower limit on turnover before dealers are required to do this.

Third, it's very easy to write software that calculates taxes on the basis of a ZIP code, when preparing the bill. UNLESS that software is grossly overpriced, this doesn't look like much of a 'nightmare'.

Cheers,

R.
I think that the bill will change to a ten million dollar lower limit as it moves through the mark-up process, and I think the bill requires that the taxing entity provide just the software you've mentioned free to the retailers.

Sales tax is a fact of life, as is VAT in most other countries. I've always paid my taxes, that is what gives me the right to complain when I see the money being used in ways I feel are unwise.

But ... Joe is right. Lets keep thing to cameras and photography, and get off the taxes and politics jag, ok?

This IS photography. If cameras and film went up by 8% for any other reason, there'd be a mighty long thread about it. Refuse to discuss things, and you are easy meat for anyone who can phrase a question in a form that you ban. Vics's posts have been among the most interesting that I have read:

I know that lots of folks go to the local shop to fondle and learn and then buy online. This whole thing has been a reality here in California for a while now. The last two items I bought from KEH had CA sales tax added. I checked with the local shops first to be sure they didn't have what I needed.

Living as close to New Hampshire as I do, a P.O. Box across the river may be a wise investment, however...

Once you've made one small mistake, you're committed to making more...

My entire life in a nutshell.

I bet it will be Windows version tax software for free 😉 if you run your business on Linux or OS X, you'll have to write your own or pay.

Speaking from the position of having a small business that sells internet based subscription software, I can tell you this bill will cost us not insignificant productivity lost to integrating tax account software, and managing the remittances. That is time spent instead of innovating or adding value, which is what we startups are supposed to do.

But Amazon wants you to waste time, so they can eat your lunch as it were...

Now that I see Amazon is for it, it may be a bad idea after all.

I doubt it will pass the house though, so don't worry yet.

Contact your congressman or woman to vote this down. With luck the house kills it.

At this point, the House has not even put the bill on its legislative calendar.

Could this be the end of eBay? Probably not, since buying and selling there is a well established habit, and habits are hard to break. It could cut into their business though, once online buying and selling no longer seems so attractive compared to going to the local dealer, where you can get customer service. Ebay might have to reduce its final value fee to compensate.

It's eBay that's behind the move to raise the threshold to 10 million, since that's the "small business" threshold for other government departments, SBA, etc. I heard about the software provision on NPR and, I think, On CBS news.

Roger, can you please provide a link to where the bill says that software will be provided free to the retailers? I cannot find it.

Much obliged.
Dear Keith,

No, because I never claimed it. What I said (in post 30) was "UNLESS that software is grossly overpriced, this doesn't look like much of a 'nightmare'."

Perhaps you are thinking of a later post where I quoted Vics, after saying "Vics's posts have been among the most interesting that I have read:"

Cheers,

I saw a comment regarding states providing software on CNN and Yahoo! If Keith needs a link, I'll boot the PC, as cut and paste on the tablet is too annoying for me to take the time.

I didn't search the bill itself, but this USA Today article (published prior to Senate passage) mentions the requirement, along with the need for states to provide a single entity so that companies don't need to wade through city and county issues.

As I noted previously, Yahoo and CNN also pointed this out...

However, I don't expect this to pass the house, so don't worry... Yet.

Yes, but I provided a link and added an additional bill feature.

And, I hope it passes, as I like to support my local dealer whenever possible. But I agree that the House beats to a different drum.

It's mentioned in this USA Today article, "Times Have Changed" section, second par.

In my county in northern IL, each town has a different sales tax rate.

Personally, I would shrug it off and keep on buying photography gear online, which will still likely be cheaper.
