I have been thinking about the same for many months now. My questions will be very simple:
- where to buy an M3/MP style advance lever?
- who knows how to swap the advance lever on an M7?
Thanks.

You could probably get the part from Sherry K, or DAG, or Kindermann--any Leica service center. Evidently it's not hard to do, if you have the tools--but my camera was in for service anyway, so I had Kindermann do it.

Owning both, I really don't feel much difference. Sure, there IS a difference. I just don't care very much about it. You may or may not care as much.

They're very easy to replace if you have the right tools. You unscrew the retaining ring from around the advance lever, remove it and then drop the new lever in. screw the retaining ring into place and voila, your job is complete. $400 is amazingly costly. I wouldn't be suprised if DAG / sherry had a few extra levers kicking around.

I hate the plastc tipped levers. The solid M3, M2, MP levers make you feel the wonderful mechanical quality of the cameras better.

I have used both types, and I have developed a strong preference for the MP/M3/M2 style knobs/kranks for aesthetic and ergonomic reasons.

Like kzphoto said, it's an easy job. Get a lever from one of the sources mentioned above, a clamp like this and you can't fail!
Steel clamps? I thought copper was better....

This was the one I found, it worked for me. But I'm sure copper is better...
