Playing with my ‘new’ single stroke M3 today, I decided to try a double stroke film advance. It worked. My question is whether this is somehow bad for the camera. The M2 manual says either technique is acceptable, but that’s the M2. Sorry if this seems elementary, but it’s all new to me.

2 or multiple....all good. Welcome to the M club H!

If it could, it wouldn't be a DS. 🙂

FWIW, a DS can be updated to SS by any qualified Leica tech.

When DAG did a few of mine before 1990, I got the DS mechanism back separately. Therefore it depends on parts availability or if the transport can be converted to SS and those parts are available.

Years back when spares ran out, new spares were made. Not the same company now at all.

I would call to see if it still can be done

Alright, so the camera does work. Congratulations! Doing the double should save on straining your thumb with that long single stroke.

My first M3 is a double stoke - it seems fast and natural. My second M3 is a single-stroke, but I got so used to doing a double stroke, that's all I do. It won't harm anything.

Thinking about it, I double-stroke any camera which permits it.

Perfectly acceptable with any ratcheted film advance (which is just about every ‘modern’ 35mm camera), that’s what the ratchet is for 🙂
