M4-P. An undervalued gem?

Wow, you took a flyer on this:" We’re not sure if it’s working since we don’t know much about cameras." You are a brave man indeed.

i don't care what any one says this picture of Shadofox's camera is about as sexy a Leica as i have ever seen .... what a combo

Why thank you MISH! I think as a 'working-class' Leica, the M4-P is at home with a simple apron as a background ;)

Mate, I saw this on ebay but thought it looked pretty suspicious. Well done! I ended up getting mine for $800US and doubt it will be as pristine as yours. The pictures in your aution didn't do any justice to it, did they!

i'm guessing the price on the m4-p is about to go up pretty quick..

Joe,

It is demand and supply.
Let's now say bad things about the M4-p, buy one, then praise it! :D

The auction said it came with instructions, which arrived in the form of this book:

Notice the M4-P, without a red dot, and with a Noctilux.

Inside the front cover it says "General Catalogue for Photographic Dealers."

I think I'll try my m4p out with a shoe mounted meter. Any recommendations for a small one that does good center weighted metering for 35/50 lenses? The MR4 and CV ones seem pretty large. How do the gossens work with the shoe accessory?

Hey Ted, the CV II is tiny. The Gossen's shoe accessory makes the whole contraption look like... well a contraption :)

Here's the CVII on a M2:

Yeah, I read that and thought "omigosh, they know it's badly wrecked inside and are trying to cover their backsides." My bad! :) Congrats on a great deal on a great camera!

This one looks good ! Seems to be in very good condition. I bought the M4-P as my back-up camera for the MP but since the MP has to go to Leica service for a second round (just received it back from service and some part of the top-cover sealing sticks out :bang:) the M4-P became my main camera now. It is a fine tool :)

EDIT: the following concerns now seem to be unfounded.

Ok, now I'm VERY suspisious of this listing: 130161562837

Compare it, the product line, photo, listing appearance etc with this listing which I won: 280155372856

Except for an extra few details, they are exactly the same. The seller of the auction still in progress seems pretty dodgy to me. I emailed him and asked for a picture of the serial number to see if he was ripping off the auction I won and he replied that the serial number shouldn't be important to a photographer, listed the number, but didn't post a picture of it like I'd asked. I haven't received the camera in which I won yet but I'm not suspiscious as postage to New Zealand usually takes time.
I mailed ebay support with my concerns and it seems that they've gotten the situation completely back to front, thinking that my seller is dodgy etc. I've replied back trying to put them right.

Thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your MP. MP's are truly fine...

I looked thru a magnifier at the strap lugs, they are pristine, never had a strap...looking it over thoroughly, I'm fairly certain this camera has never had a roll of film in it...

Well, I suppose the seller could just be lazy, and he found another M4-P auction to use as a template...it could still be a legit sale, even if he shortcutted the process.

I emailed him asking if he had any other photos, I'll post how he responds...

Cheers, mate. Thought it looked a bit strange. I even looked at the price and thought I might make another cheeky bid to see it I could get if for a song! Then I clicked... Hang on, that looks familiar!

and how big is that m4-p? judging by the photos it looks like its a bit larger than m2, m3.

Exactly the same size. Only the weight varies, and only by an ounce or few.

eBay has a "feature" that allows you to "sell an item like this one" - which means copy the listing. I suspect the diagnosis of lazy seller is the right one.

I didn't know this was the case. If i did, I woiuldn't have asked e-bay about it.
Looking at the classifieds, it does look in good condition and a potential good addition to someones kit. Appologies to the seller if my querey caused any trouble.

Now... When will mine arrive....?

I wouldn't apologize too hard. The auction listing basically ripped off another seller's work/listing completely. As members of a group that's into content-generation, we should be at least a little sensitive to others' rights in their work, even if it's only an auction listing.

Well, it just arrived and it's a beauty. I really like the old "Leitz" etched into the top with white. What's with the film speed sticker on the back though? Seems a bit useless to me.

Tools are tools, but these Leica camera's sure are nice to hold. Think my M7 will spend more time in the tool belt and less time hammering nails from now on.
