How do i find out how old my M6 is? or any other production details? I bought it 2nd hand and registered it on the Leica site, as it seems the previous owner didn't bother.

The serial number should be on the top of the camera. Take that and use a chart like this one to see when your camera was manufactured: http://www.cameraquest.com/mtype.htm

slightly OT but what are the benefits of registration? I've not registered any of mine.

I have no idea! I registered mine thinking that all the production details and my M6's DOB would be available.

Just the standard promotional literature then?
Don't think I'll bother then!

A couple of quick ways to tell how early - an early M6 does not have rub strips above the neck strap lugs, has a metal viewfinder surround rather than rubber/plastic, and, obviously, is Leitz rather than Leica. None of the above will give you the exact birth date but they are quick ways to tell earlier from later.
