Hi Martin,
I admire your B&W pictures from Praha.
Yesterday I brought my B&W photos made in a lab. I am totally dissappointed with the result, and, of course, discouraged to try BW again. When we met in Praha you told me that the result will not be satisfactory. Now I see that you were right more tham I thought then.
Maybe I try BW with other film sometimes (I used Tri-X, which is too hard). Foma????

Hi Zdenek,

it's allways the same, Labs don't make B&W photos perfect,
You may try it with Fomapan 100, you can get it near Mustek station in the fomashop, they also have a lab-service.
But ofcourse start to develop it by yourself.
Hey Zdenek, you own a perfect Leica MP (me too 🙂 ), so start your work in bw at home.
You know your Leica works perfect, the films Tri-X or Fomapan are very good, and ofcourse, Praha is the city of Black and White photographie.
Remeber Sukek, Janda, Funke Kudelka.....

Go to the Sudek Atelier in Uyezd Street an buy the wonderfull DVD about Sudek and feel the outstanding spirit in Praha.

Sorry, I'm so glad about my 10 days in your city, I can't describe it.

Hi Martin,

Unfortunately I could process only BW film at home but not photos having not equipment and room for that kind of work. I know that nice pictures can be made even from not properly exposed negatives if they get appropriate care. I processed my BW material totally myself (including preparing fix bath and developper for positive process from chemicals) about 25 yrs ago; my negatives were far from perfection but the pictures are not bad. I had a cheap Russion camera at that time.

Anyway "Einmal ist keimal" as you say so I am going to make another BW experiment with other lab.

PS: Also Plicka is (was) a great photographer of Prague, esp. buildings. Recently I saw a sale of his outstanding book Prague in Photographhy (or Photorgraphs), BW, of course. I was surprised becase the book is out of print many years.

So I wish you good luck with developing prints in a lab.

Here in germany you won't have succes because they always scan the negativs and print it digital.
Environmental problems with the chemicals have to be handeld very well and thats seems to be one of the greatest probems over all.

But I think in Praha there must excist a lot of people practising photolab at home or in rentallabs, I remeber a offer at the door in the foma shop. There were some famos besselers shown in a wide lab to rent.
So why not have a look at the shop.

Hi Martin,
Yes it was really nice meeting in Praha which is the very "phogenic" city. I refer about it here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28055
Surely there are person here who owns a lab, But most of people here are for themselves alone. You understand what I mean. I'll do some detective work in this respect, and maybe ....
BW photography is not as easy as it appears. On the other hand the colour photograpy is not so precise exposure dependent as BW, and it is much more easier for me at present. Dealing with light and shadows is much more complicated and requires experience and to able to see. That which looks fine in colour need not be nice in BW, and vice versa. In the past BW pics are normal expression but now our sight is spoiled due to colour expression.

ah, I understand, just let me explain:

this is Hanah beeing photographed by Frantisek,
while I took the photo from behind Hanah,
seeing Frantisek's face.
So I was standing inside the antikshop,
Hanah in the open door and Frantisek was outside on the sunnyside of life 🙂

Prague is grand.

I have attended month long photography classes during July the past two years in Prague. These classes were part of Western Michigan University's Prague Summer Program (PSP).

Mostly for undergraduates, it is also open to anyone. We meet many very well known Czech photographers. I (we) have met and/or studied under Rudo Prekop, Miro Švolík, Miroslav Páral (more well known as a sculptor), Jan Reich, Jindřich Streit, and perhaps others that I am forgetting.

I have blogged all about my PSP experience which you can read about here.

I will be returning next year for sure. If you love photography and love Prague (or think that you might), you should consider WMU's PSP next summer.

(I am a former student and otherwise in no way affiliated with the PSP.)

::sigh:: I only spent two days in Prague and yet I miss it. That was over five years ago, but I loved the people, I loved the city, just how quiet it was. I've been told it's changed a lot since then, but I still want to go back.

I love getting lost in cities I don't know. Unfortunately, I only carried a P&S back then, and took very few shots. But the streets...I loved it all.

What I found interesting, though, is that nobody knew where Franz Kafka's place was, nor were he was buried. I found his tomb by accident, btw.

Any city that loved Mozart is ok by me 😉
