M6 TTL Shutter Noise

Hi,

I've just bought an M6 TTL, and it's my first Leica. I've noticed that at shutter speeds below 1/60 the shutter makes a sort of short, snickering noise immediatelyafter the main (very quiet) click of the shutter. The snickering becomes more noticeable as the shutter speed decreases (i.e. it's a bit more at 1/30, then more at 1/15, etc) until, at very low speeds (0.5 sec and 1 sec) it's clearly the sound of something mechanical winding down. Is this normal? I've run a couple of rolls through it and it gives great results (make that pin-sharp, contrasty results that make me realize that my old SLR probably needed a good service), but, like all parents with a new baby, I'm a bit worried about it.

Thanks for listening!

Lee.

The "snicker" is normal, and it *should* be there :)
It's the slow speed mechanism winding down.
Everything's OK with your camera, relax :D

Why don't you register and post some photos in the gallery?

Regards,

Denis

The baby will be fine. Mine is with me for 2 months or so now. I was quite surprised myself to find out that all this quiet shutter talk is a bunch of hog wash. Us crazy Leica guys leading others down the path of financial ruin. Enjoy and yes, register and join us more.

Well compared to a lot of other cams it is relatively quiet! And the buzzing you are hearing Lee is just the slow speed shutter escapement doing its thing. Join up, and we promise not to encourage you to spend your money on camera gear. Honest! :D

ah, for that gentle quiet of a 'p' in the night.

joe;)

Don't talk to me about P in the night! Just once I'd like to sleep the whole night through without a bathroom visit to hear the gentle sound of P in the night.

You guys worry too much about these things! :)

Lee, that's fine. I had the same reaction. "The whispering queen"? Baloney!

But don't they really fit well in your hands? ;)

So those modern Leica's are nisier? They didn't make them then like they did before!
My M2 - which looks almost as bare as SolaresLavarres 'new' M3 is silent down to 1/8. Then the slow sinding mechanism becomes audible till just after the final click. Beautiful.
No M6 for me then!

I am rapidly becoming oldfashioned!

Rob.

The M7 is the quietest of all the M's and I've had'em all at one point or another. Well never had an M5. The lightest "snick" and no mechanical bzzzzzzzzzzzz at low speeds.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks, everyone, for your kind replies. My mind's at ease now, and I'm looking forward to the weekend and running a few films through the M6. I've registered, as suggested, an maybe I'll post some photos , although I'm not sure I come up to the standard of some of the works I've seen on the site.

Cheers,

Lee.

My MP is exactly as noisy as a friend's M3. They sound the same.

And they ain't silent. Not by a long shot.

And none of my leaf shuttered lenses in my Universal are anything that I'd call "quiet," either. I thought the Nikon S2 was loud, but only in comparison to the Leica. The Kiev 4 is quieter under certain situations!

Ha. Leica- buy it for the glass, finder, and reasonably long lasting ability. Quiet? Nah.
