I have never trusted a reflective meter the way I trust that in the M6. Started shooting the M6 with Kodachrome, learned what the camera would do using that unforgiving and expensive medium, and have never looked back.

I intend to buy an ALC MP to get that meter. I'm using turning 60 as my alibi and so far the Mrs. seems to buy into it. 😀

I'm also doing it because I'm that optimistic about the future of film. 😉

I started out with an M3 DS back in college. I loved it, but, needed a car, so I traded it for an Alfa Romeo. No I didn't say I needed a practical car.

Anyhow, a year later, I bought an M4. That is a much better camera than the M3, and I still own it. I bought an M6 at some point, but, the M4 will always be my personal favorite. Now, if only I hadn't bought and then sold that Summilux 35mm.....
 
i sold my M3DS to buy a M6TTL.
i love the M6, but i miss the M3. at the time i could have afforded to keep it, but couldnt justify having 2 Leica's.
i will probably buy another one day.

Same here, I didn't get the feel of quality from the M6 that I do from an M3. The M6 has it's benefits like film loading and the meter, but I'd take a ZI over an M6, and get all the modern stuff.

The M3 is just a thing of beauty though, I've never had a camera quite like it for build quality and feel. I probably slightly prefer the DS too, the film wind is so smooth and effortless.
 
Biased: The M3 will free you. Get an M3 & a used gossen digisix. Sell the digisix after you realize you don't need it. Use the rest of your cameras with your new mind's eye.

If you shop right you can get either an M3 or an M6, change your mind and sell it, buy the other.

There are many ways to look at this. If I ever get a M camera I could well choose the M-6. I have already been freed from the meter by my IIIf. (lol) Yes, it's true: you need a meter less than you think, . . . but speaking only for myself it is good to have a meter for interior shots, for example.

Yeah I guess if we are being honest, there are way too many ways to skin a cat. Having a nice dslr, I can afford to "go against the grain" a little with my M3. Buy quick and buy often. Can't go wrong with a Leica 😎

I would go for an M6 vice M3. Don't know why but never bonded with M3 but I .love my M2, probably due to 35 vice 50 framelines. They are certaiy pretty identical cameras from the same era.

If you feel the need for a meter, an M6 is hard to beat. Some films, like Ektar100, have very narrow exposure latitude.

+1...^...I am a diehard 5cm kinda guy. And the MR4 light meter is quite nice too.
