M6 vs. MP Shutter Noise.

I am sure it is a individual camera to camera difference. My M3 is quieter than my M6, but it was serviced more recently.

My MP is much quieter than my M6 and a little quieter than my M4

It has been said that the brass top cameras have a different shuuter sound than the zinc top cameras. Less of a click, more of a muffled click. Cameras and ears vary.

MP is a brass top, M6 zinc. My LHSA black paint M6ttl is very very quiet. It has a brass top.

M7 beats them all I think.

The M7 is little quieter than the MP I was considering last year when making a decision between the two. Before considering an M7 (assuming that the sound was a critical decider) and I guess you probably already know this, the shutter dial rotates in the oposite direction to the other Ms apart from the M6TTL. For some this is not a problem. For others it is.

I was trying to compare the shutter sounds of the M7, MP, M3 and M6 but my cat kept walking into the room making it hard to hear them quite well enough to determine which is quieter, so I went out shooting instead.

All camera bodies have their own voices. My three Leicas are all very silent, and they all sing in a different tone. One is a bit of a baritone, the other less so, and the M3 is really a nice tenor.

The only M camera I found to be really quiet was the M7. Even at 1/15 of a second you don't hear the springs and innards making the peculiar noises I'm familiar with. Since a quiet shutter seems to drive your decision, and both camera prices aren't much different, go for an M7.

😀 😀 funny, Rich. 😀 😀

My recently serviced M4-P in a half-case is quiet, but I think not as quiet as my naked MP, and neither is as quiet as the M7 in a half-case (or probably a naked M7). I don't know if a half-case contributes to shutter noise reduction, especially on a camera as well built as a Leica, but it seems to me that it can't hurt (I'm sure it helps on my CLE). Like Rich, at this point I feel they're all quiet enough.
