My M7 loaded with xp2 and iso set manually ( not dx ) to 320 and 'auto'
mode indicates a iso - 400 for a few seconds when switched on and ready.
I found the manual confusing! Should it not read iso = 320?
It does however indicates this value when no film is loaded and iso set
manually.

No, when the camera is powered on it will read the cassette to tell you what ISO film is loaded in the camera. I find this useful- I can then do a double check of the ISO dial and see what I'm doing if I've left a film in the camera.
